“We are not here in this world to find elegant solutions, pregnant with initiative, or to serve the ways and modes of profitable progress. No, we are here to provide for all those who are weaker and hungrier, more battered and crippled than ourselves. That is our only certain good and great purpose on earth, and if you ask me about those insoluble economic problems that may arise if the top is deprived of their initiative, I would answer ‘To hell with them.’ The top is greedy and mean and will always find a way to take care of themselves. They always do.” (Michael Foot RIP)

Discuss.

This is the code i try to live by

Matthew 25:35-41 (New International Version)

35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'

37"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'

40"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

Same thing,different speaker.

Noble words from Mr. Foot, but not worth a lot. As with all these people, they talk the talk, but don't offer any practical solutions on how to enable!

I know, him and Jesus...

What would your practical solution be? You might want to illustrate your response by reference to industrial injury statistics before and after the passage of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1975, of which M Foot was rightly proud.

Or he might not want to be told what to do.

Or he might think that reference to that Act shows a parochiality that takes no account of the fact that most people who were weak, starving, battered or crippled in the world when Foot said that still are!

Surely the practical solution is to live your life according to these values, not to encourage exploitation and greed,
A simlpe example,it is currently fair trade fortnight only 5% of the tea drunk in britain is fair trade, wat a difference ppl could make if they shopped ethically

Do unto others as you would be done by.

As you sow, so shall you reap.

From all according to their ability, to all according to their need.

So many ways to say it!

Greed is within us all - even for sex - isnt that why this site is here? - so no one can walk away unscathed from Foot's remark.

I grew up in the 80's where greed was rife but its always been the way and I didnt undertsand it when I was young and still don't now. I am saddened by the wastage of life and its resources and the suffering BUT I do not make a difference in trying to do something to stop it. Okay I can give to charities and make all the right noises but I do not stand up to be counted. Instead I do what people used to do in the pub, stand around and moan about it online.

I assume you refer to the 1974 Act which was the work of many.

And the Secretary of State who secured the passage of the bill through parliament (at a time when Labout had either no majority or a tiny majority) was? M Foot.
