Hi....

More sound advice....not tried linux yet....can you still run it from a boot disc??

Gary...

It all depends on the particular Linux distribution variant. You maybe thinking of Knoppix which runs totally off CD and only uses the HD for data files (it has no problem using NTFS drives).

Hi can you tell me is it as easy as it looks when you try to download windows XP over windows vista?

To be honest I'm not sure installing over Vista would be successful unless you do as Gay suggested and go for a dual boot system

Although there are many similarities between XP and Vista there are enough differences to make for a lot of problems trying to share.

If he's not interested in keeping Vista on the machine (and TBH I can't see why he would be) then the best way would be to nuke the lot by formatting the drive during the XP install.

This would of course destroy all data on the drive prior to the install, so he would need to have all his data files backed up.

that sounds an easier option to have both vista and xp on then he can choose which to boot from, from what he saying he has seen it on the internet and you download from there, it just seemed too easy as I though you had to buy the xp program

If I'm reading this right and not confusing his technical knowledge with yours, if he thinks XP is a 'program' you download from the 'net I'd recommend he stick with Vista (shudder) because if he doesn't know what he's doing then he is most likely to wreck both operating systems and end up with an unusable computer.

If he does actually know what he's doing and is quite happy to download an operating system off the net for free then I'd recommend he go for Linux instead of XP. A Linux distribution like Ubuntu is totally free, very easy to install and is a perfect competitor for XP. Most of the desktop software for Linux is also free such as Gimp (an imaging software similar to Photoshop) OpenOffice (which is a similar thing to, and compatible with, Microsoft Office). There are all manner of other things too, all free including Firefox.

many thanks for your help so far....

i have spoke to him again and basicly what he wants is something called "xsata" which is something he links his xbox 360 to his laptop so he can save games onto his laptop and then rung them on xbox 360, apparently it needs to be explore 360 compatible too.

he bought this gadget and hasnt managed to find any "driver" ( which he was told he needed to run it)

I think if he had these then he would probably stay with vista

oh apparently a "patch" might do it

Vista Help - we have a fairly new HP desktop machine, running Vista Home Edition, 3gb RAM, 500 GB hdd (partitioned to 450 and 50gb) and 350 external drive which is for daily back ups. Less than 2 gb of stuff in My Docs, not many programmes installed (10gb max)but the hard drive is now showing that it only has 30gb free. No back ups are done on to the internal hard drive, all onto the external one.

I have done disk clean up (including all old restore points apart from the last one), defrag, and deleted all tmp files. I have also restricted the restore point size to 5gb but the hard drive is getting fuller by the day (at a rate of around 4gb per day)

I'm having Facebook issues! The site loads, my home page and profile are visable as is my mail, but when I go to look at other people's profiles I just get a blank page with the word 'done' in the bottom left of the window - is it a connection issue? I don't know where to start looking for the problem.

In edit: I'm on wifi braodband, use IE and XP

I'll lay odds the middle one is the guilty party. To quote the technical thread mantra, try Firefox (preferably v3 now that it's out of beta) it's free and it's much, much better than IE (a lot faster to render too).

Ok, tried a few things mentioned (thanks for your input people) The same thing happens on Firefox, refreshing the page on either program does nothing, except once with firefox I got a page of code - refreshed again and got back to the empty page. I don't understand why it's only on certain parts of the site, ie profiles - the rest of it seems to work fine.

Ah, now the "page of code" bit gives a clue that the problem is either with the server (most likely) or that data is getting lost between you and the server (much less likely).

Facebook coding is very, very flaky mainly because of the amount of javascript and Ajax code that is being used (this is why I recommended Firefox, as IE isn't all that Ajax compliant).

For you to receive a page of code it means that the server has only sent part of the page code. The first part contains information on how the browser should render the code.

I can't say that I've experienced the same problem whilst on Facebook, but that could just be because I don't use it very much or very deeply.

Another alternate theory could be that the profile you are trying to load contains lots of those bloody stupid 'applications' and either the quantity or maybe one of them is flaky is what's causing the server to barf.

The odds are though that it's a problem that you personally can't do anything about, other than the odd epithet and a desire for a glass of wine.

Thanks Gary, problem now sorted. I knew it was an virus or anything like that (it isnt even conected to the internet) and I do have AVG/Spybot etc installed just incase I move anything from my PC to his.

I found the problem using WinDirStat. It seems one of the programme he uses for his video editing was creating shadow files of everything he did, so we now have 400gb free and all 50+ versions of a wedding video he did a couple of weeks back have been deleted icon_lol.gif

Thanks everyone

D'you mean the desire for a glass of wine shouldn't be ever present? Oh dear.

It depends on what you mean by memory? If you mean they were stored on your hard drive then that's something totally different to "memory". Anything actually in memory when you reboot is lost.

If the images are on your hard drive and disappeared after a reboot then that's something else entirely. I'm going with the latter.

To answer this effectively a bit of info is required. When you say "lost", what do you actually mean? Were they in a specific folder and now the folder is empty, or the folder has disappeared. Also what application were you using to see the list of images and is that what is telling you that they are no longer there?

When you rebooted what were you doing, ie what applications were open and was it a clean boot, i.e. did the computer shut itself down or did it hang and you switched off?
