feckin ecstatic....

I thought that it would be a faff to set up the i-pod thingie.. .then I had to do something as my p.c. is feckin around and I want to listen to my new CDS that I got for my burfday. anyhoo... installed it all and it is merrily transferring everything across. I am sooooo happy.

Reet now, my p.c.

It is getting over hot and stopping everytime it loads up.
I have started it happily in safe mode and it loves it. I have virus checked and all that mallarkey. I have also vaccummed all the dust (and there was a lot) and it worked for a whole hour. It is now back to the beginning again where it crashes and then attempts to restart and even before the password screen (I have one to prevent my son seeing his mum's 'photo's' icon_redface.gif ) it crashes....

I assume it is overheating. Can I fix that easily ? if so what do I do ?

Sounds like the fan that cools the processor is broken or about to break.

If your computer is recently new then I'd suggest taking it back and tell them you want it fixing...if it's older :

If you can find out which processor it is, you should be able to get a replacement. I won't be able to tell you how to remove the old one and replace it without knowing which one it is, although most fans are easy to replace.

To find out what processor you have do the following if you have Vista (XP should be similar if not the same....):

Go to the start button (bottom left)

Select "System and maintenance" and then "System"

The screen should then tell you what processor you have (eg - mine is a Intel Celeron 530 @ 1.73)

The important bit is the NAME of the processor, mainly certain processors HAVE to have a certain type of fan to cool it.

If you have a local computer shop, take the information in and ask them for a price (I can't help you with how much you should expect to pay again as I don't know what you have icon_sad.gif ) DO try to avoid places such as PC world as they take your soul as payment.

The removal of the casing is again dependant on what you have, but should be straight forward....however, if in doubt get a local expert (or geek) to help you.

Hope that helps icon_biggrin.gif

Well sounds bad - obviously its still doing something - have you tried putting the manufacturers CD in to start it from there?

Alternatively - check the hard drive cable is correctly seated - I have known some to come loose.

To see if the drive is stuffed I would recommend a boot stick with a basic linux OS on to run it - see the UBUNTU website. If you cant even see a BIOS boot screen then it may be really bad.

Either way if you do end up discarding it take the hard drive out (should remove from the lappy underside) before and you may be able to recover the data by getting a drive caddy with USB connectivity for the 2.5" HDD

Anyone else???

The latest version of iTunes allows network sharing - if your sons computer and yours are on the same router, you can share all tunes between PC's

You might have got a copy of windows with your pc, or a disc that does clever magic and fixes stuff for you. you need to do a bodge to get it to boot from this so best trott off and see if you have one first, then we can tell you how to do the bodge

Alternatively - check the hard drive cable is correctly seated - I have known some to come loose.

turn your lappy upside down, see if there are some covers you can unscrew. if you find a silver box thingy under one of em, see if the cable doodah is shoved in proper

Bios= Basic input/output system, sort of like the computers natuaral instincts which gives all the electronic widgets a prod to wake em up
Ubuntu is like a little version of windows but with less useless shite. you but it onto one of those little USB memory stick things you normally keep dirty pics on but once again you need to bodge things to boot from this...so sort out if you have everything first

Either way if you do end up discarding it take the hard drive out (should remove from the lappy underside) before and you may be able to recover the data by getting a drive caddy with USB connectivity for the 2.5" HDD

Take the silver box of memory out, stick it in a special thingywotsit and plug it into a different computer, see if you can get all your shit of it or see if its proper fucked innit

Boot it up and look for the bit about entering setup (will probably be delete, F1 or F2)
go to the section for boot sequence and set it to boot from the CD Rom first.
Save it all and reboot with the first of your restore discs in there and hopefully it should be uncle bob time icon_wink.gif

Can i suggest the manufacturers website. There will be a help and support bit. There is normally (with the better manufacturers!) a bit where you can enter your model number or serial number. That should then give you all you need to know re the recovery discs. Although usually the pc should just boot from them.

Sounds like the hard drive bearing or a head crash to platen - your HDD may be well n truly fooked.

HDD failure wouldn't result in a blank screen as the BIOS is resident on an Eprom chip, so its independant of the hard drive.
A blank screen is more of an indication of a power fault or a fault with the screen/ graphics card icon_wink.gif
