I hear all the time about people like a dog owner whose dog attacks another dog, or a drug addict who has stolen money from charity tins, or a bloke pissing on a war memorial, all NOT going to jail for crimes that should have seen them sent to prison but....now I see a guy jailed for six months, yes not a suspended term but a proper sentence, for failing to pay a fine for letting people smoke in his pub.

Fecking typical mad liberal leftie Britain....in 2010

Not sure, dog on dog crime is a jailable offences really dunno.gif

Possibly the drug addict is.....

But the pissing on war memorial, is not a jailable offence, only one punishment fits this crime

Obviously that comes from a smoker? Thought not?

Been away for a while and just read this so sorry for not replying before.

To answer your question, yes I am a smoker. Do I still stand by my statement........yes I do.

It will be nice in the future to see a non-smoking UK. The health of the country will increase dramatically. I believe that one day it will be non-smoking. Nowt to do with the laws or bans or ASH or any of that. I believe that people have now been given the information on how much of a killer cigarettes are. Since the 50's the rate of smoking has been dropping by about 10% per decade. So by the end of the century there will be a very small section who still smoke, so a total ban will be possible.

Well Davey I am sure that when these nosey parkers are finished with the cigarette industry and are then bored, they will no doubt move onto the harm drink does.

Or....the harm the car does.

Let people make their own minds up used to be a fantastic trait of the UK, until Nanny took over.

Yep. Totally agree that people should be able to do what they want when they want as long as it does not affect someone elses enjoyment to do what they want and where they want.

The pub and smoking industry have only themselves to blame for this predicament that we find ourselves in. They were asked to bring in a voluntary code in the 1990's. What did they do.......produced a blue sign that read smoking allowed everywhere on this establishment. They didn't just shoot themselves in the foot with that.......they took their whole leg off.

Anyway, the law has not stopped me smoking........just stopped my smoke from harming others that do not want to be harmed by my smoke. Whats wrong with that? I can smoke and they can breathe without getting ill. Looks good to me

Might be a good idea then to stop driving as well....just in case you knock someone over. Can't take chances now can we?

Do not want to injure someone whilst out driving.

Not everyone kills someone when they drive, yet secondhand smoke kills. Not a good comparison IMO

Driving is essential given the state of our public transport system and rail infrastructure. If the internal combustion engine were to be banned tomorrow then society would be in trouble - no food deliveries, many people unable to get to work etc. If smoking were to be banned tomorrow it would only affect smokers, not society as a whole.

Very true. icon_biggrin.gif

I have no interest in people smoking in their cars - apart from lighting up and such like which is a distraction from driving. And there are plenty of drivers out there barely managing to drive in a straight line as it is without any extra distractions. But the same applies to unwrapping sweets, fiddling with the satnav/cd player or (my personal bug-bear) putting make-up on.

But what really makes me angry is seeing an adult in a car puffing away with some poor kid in the back being slowly kippered by the smoke. There is no way that is acceptable. And opening the window isn't much help. Smoking in a vehicle that is carrying children shouldn't NEED to be banned - but if it was I would support it. And I'm not just pontificating here - both may parents smoked and us 3 kids lived in a fug of smelly smoke at home and in the car.

They did stop eventually - my Dad when it killed him, and my Mum when she was in here 70's (Thanks a bunch Mum!).

Thinking about it - the child will be in a child safety seat (more often than not), belted in and protected from danger. So why does the parent - for whom the safety and health of their child should be paramount - then light up? I don't get it. dunno.gif

No idea... I'm not a parent but I don't smoke in my flat, not solely because of my pet but I certainly don't want him to have breathe in my smoke. I think I'm quite a considerate smoker. I don't have a car any more but when I did, I didn't smoke in it when there were non smokers in it. Just as I wouldn't go into someone else's house and smoke. The smoking ban was in force up here long before it was down there so I've been used to being forced to smoke outside since that started although I've always smoked outside so it's not really something that's worried me.

If they ban smoking in cars then it will be an inconvenience if I'm ever driving anywhere t have to stop somewhere but it's not the end of the world. I am serious about the road rage thing though... it will become a problem.

Ban smoking whilst driving because it distracts the drivers attention?

Ok then if they do that then how about banning;

All sound systems /Singing in the vehicle

'Hands free' phone use whilst driving

Any Talking to / Distraction of the driver by passengers (just like on the buses)

Any manoever, whilst driving, which means not having both hands on the wheel to do it.
Changing gear or changing a cd / radio station is no different a distraction that lighting a fag.

Furthermore,

Install Tachographs linked to Police computers so we can't drive too much without a break and microphones to allow the police to 'tune' in to any car they may be following to see if they can nail you with a money spinning fine and points on your licence.

Where does it all end?

I stopped going to pubs when the smoking ban came in and now i couldn't care less if every pub and club in the UK closed up for good.

I find the sight of drunken people as disgusting in public as non smokers find the sight or smell of someone smoking.

I bet the majority of non smoking drinkers don't want all the pubs to close .
Why would any smoker support them though?

This seems to be the reason that the ban should come in. Has anyone seen any figures to show an increased rise in vehicle accidents whilst smoking...........or is it a case of "They could be distracted"?

If it is the latter then the charges of careless or dangerous driving should do IMO

Would "linked to the VOSA computers" do ?
Trucks with digital tachos are [in effect] linked to the VOSA system.
Every 28 days there is a download of the detail held on the tacho.
Soon to be from a car ?

smoking in cars..is technically already banned. the highway code states that you should have two hands on the wheel at all times, apart from when changeing gear. I remember reading one guy one guy was told off by police for eating an apple, whilst driving, as he didn't have adequate control of the vehicle.
Personally...I don't have a problem....as long as its your car. If its a work vehicle and other people have to use that vehicle after you...then I think no you should not.
