I shall be too busy earning a living to riot

nice to know you will be able to.....64 million saved this year says Mr cameron....how many jobs is that then !! If average wage is lets say £25,000.....there will be alot of people out of work and ready to riot !!!!

i do believe the reason`s we need such cuts is due to financial rape of the country`s finances by gordon brown and new labour whistling.gifwhistling.gif

YOu're entitled t believe what you like, but I think you're wrong, and in the absence of any evidence on your part I'm not persuaded by your repeated use of the word rape.

allow me then

i think their may have been an objection here to the fact that using a term with specific meaning, that describes a horrific and personal attack, that is a trigger for many and should not be diminished,to describe a political party and its actions is wrong and inappropiate.

If thats not what u meant away, sorry, its what i think and it annoys the hell out of me.

Sometimes it is appropriate to use the word when describing some actions, other than the sexual content. It is a word that has a message to say and that is how you use it. The famous use of the word, and it sits just right IMO, is the Rape of Nanking. No other word could describe the horror in that city.

Dave_Notts

the Rape of Nanking involved mass rape as a weapon of war,and is therefore i think a perfectly valid description.(i am not saying the event was so called because of this)

i understand that the word is used to describe a variety of things, and it is a very strong word, but i personally feel it should be used with care.

Words are powerful things, this was brought home to me reading this morning where someone had suggested Obama was going to be lynched for something. They were using a commen term without thinking of the power behind the word when using it towards a black American.

The word rape is such a powerful word that i feel quite strongly that it should only be used to describe the act of violation of a person and not as a metaphor. However i do understand that we all use language differently.Indeed we could get onto meta languages here and i could bore u all day icon_smile.gif

Rob, i understand there was no intent behind your use of the word.

Don't wish to quote all the above...so just saying:

Think the financial problems...are not wholely Gordan Brown and new labours fault. It is a worldwide situation..as can be seen from Greece....and now very fast..Portugal...Spain and Ireland and slipping close !! All i was answeing is who the people were that were going to riot.
As for the cuts.....well for me its like the lawn....its been raining for two weeks..the grass needs cutting.....but if you do cut it....you will just rip the grass up....you need to wait till the sun comes out and its dry.....Yes we need to reign back and cut, the question is..when and by how much. As I say....if it was my job, and I had worked at it, I wouldn't be best pleased when I was thrown on the dole, in what will be a very difficult employment time.

Very pleasing to have so many meaningful replies to my orig thread. I think we will know quite soon if we are also going to go into a downward spiral - I think we should just avoid it, but you never know!

They did use rape of women but there was an awful lot of other nasty stuff that happened at Nanking. So they used the word to describe the whole affair and not just one part. It is easy to see in the dictionary where rape is defined as you say and also to plunder and despoil, as in rape the countryside or in the example given, rape the pensions (as they were plundered) I don't think it has been used to heighten or lessen the debate but a good description of what happened in the OP's opinion (or whoever said it as I have forgotten now ffs).

Getting onto other words that you brought up i.e. lynching. This is where I get confused with PC usage. Lynching is a common word in the US and as well as black people getting lynched there was an awful lot of everybody getting lynched in the olden days, so to restrict it to one type of person is daft in my view. Either ban it for all or not at all. Me and a mate say we are going to lynch our kids if they are naughty again, he is black and he has never told me that he finds it offensive. People need to stop looking at what divides us but look at what brings us together........like stringing up our kids when they are a pain in the arse icon_lol.gif

PS what was the OP again? Kaz you are a pain in the bum dragging this convo out of context icon_lol.gif

The cost of bailing out the Republic of Ireland's stricken banks has risen to 45bn euro (£39bn), opening a huge hole in the Irish government's finances.

More trouble on the horizon?
