Don`t think we should go for PR as it wouldn`t work in this country as the parties are too far apart.

But we need a change in the way we vote and the way that Parliment works .What that is ,is open to debate. But what we have now in polititians from any of the parties are career polititians with little or no idea of how we the elctorate think or want.

As one ecconomist wrote maybe we should let Tesco`s run the country.

I think PR would be quite good.
No party would be able to push-through radical legislation without serious compromise.
Under-represented minorities would get more representation.
Plus, the big one, politicians of the two large parties would loathe it.
Got to be a good idea.
Mind you, since everyone else loathes the fiddling, lying b'stards...it would be great to see them forced to talk to people whose ideas they hate....like us !
AND...they may FINALLY regain control of the public servants....and stop spending ten times as much money on systems that the commercial world has been running for decades....14 billion for the nhs database ?
I mean...I KNOW that it is meant to be accessible to every single gov department...but 14 billion for a database.....are they INVENTING computing again ?

You're right a bout the ost of the NHS database except for one minor detail. The government isn't developing it. That's what the greedy private sector contractors say it will cost. If we didn't inisit on tendering work out to contractors who spend 10% of the value of the contract on marketting, 10% on bonusses and 20% on profits for sharehoilders these projects would be 40% cheaper.

The government sets the parameters within which the system operates.
The majority of medical practices now have patient databases, and then we have another database for the "national" data.
Yet more duplication.

Quote:

So why has the government refused to fix this mess? Partly, one suspects, it's the usual Whitehall control freakery, with mandarins convinced that they know best ("The programme," notes the British Computer Society's Ewan Davies, "was run by people who knew nothing about healthcare and didn't think that was a problem").

Not only that, but the government has stated that only "medical professionals" and "those directly concerned with the patient" will have access.
Well, medical professional is a wide field....and the majority of same are not doctors or nurses.
Those "directly concerned" include social workers....which by definition includes the entire council....
I've already opted-out.....
Largely because there is no hope of the records being secure....

Bearing in mind the title of this thread is 'i think labour may do better than expected' they certainly have, now that Gordon Brown has handed in his resignation for the position of leader of the Labour party.

hugz, you arent the only one,Kev doesnt expect his project working with homeless teens to remain open either, remember the number of rough sleepers there were in the 80s?

On a brighter note i just heard my first cries of "tories out" on the news, ahh the good old days.

Well am sorry to hear that matey.

But under Labour higher NHS payments, many employers would not have taken new staff on, and many would not have been able to afford the staff they had already.

Plus massive unemployment since Labour came to power, so yes it is shite for many.
, but hopefully not as many as under the Tories.

I think Labour have done better than expected ... the fact they won more seats than expected has given rise to this watered down version of the Tory party propped up with the Liberals "support"

Cameron's speech could have come out of the mouth of a new Labour politician ... just hope the Liberal influence ... if they have any ... will temper the hardcore Conservative policies.

my memories of the 80s are horrific !!

that might all alter now tho
luckily i worked hard over the years and iv got plenty of money (was able to build up my money since labour have been in) even tho im in a low paid job but savings wont last forever

feel gloomy today, never mind tho worse for other people im sure
