The energy in a gallon of petrol is equivalent to a human being working for 3 months. Does that make it any more understandable?

We use a gallon of petrol to do the work a human being does in 8 hours. The problem is exacerbated because as well as transporting a human being we are transporting a ton of car.

Therefore we are wasting 89 days worth of work.

And you think 3 months of your life is worth LESS than a gallon of petrol? All you are doing is convincing me that the work I can obtain from that petrol far outweighs the cost.

unlike oil which is finite and will run out the ability to walk will probably not.

At the moment we needlessly throw away the finite resource. At the rate of 89/90 down the drain when we drive a car.

I agree 100% where the car journey is unecessary - or when we (me included) drive to the local chinese just so it's still warm whem we get home. But, since there is no viable alternative, driving to work is the only way I will get there.

Alternatives to oil are being developed, public transport could be made available. But at the moment, a petrol/deisel powered car is truly the only transport I have available to me. Unless I sell my house and move to the crappy end of Derby and walk to work. But since houses aren't selling - even that isn't available to me.

What about those that do not work?

I have read this a dozen times, and blow me If I can make sense of any of it.

Makes no sense to me people saying bad things about the car, and then go out and drive their own.

Only those who have no car at all can judge what a car can do, otherwise it is a tad hypocritical. No matter how much you drive it.

I disagree.

If I drive a small diesel giving me 55mpg, and you drive past me in a Hummer doing 10mpg, then I can judge what that car can do.

If I drive a small diesel, and am observing motorway speed limits, and you come hooning past me doing 100mph +, then I can judge what that car can do.

So, the energy used to propel the car 30 miles in one hour is the same as the energy exerted by a man in pushing that car the same distance in 90 days.

Think I agree with Blue, seems like 89 days and 23 hours saved to me.

That's coz it doesn't make any sense. The fact a man can walk 8 hours in a day is totally irrelevant. Ben is introducing a second value "walk" and confusing it with the value "work". They are not the same and therefore can not be compared. Makes you wonder about the engineers this country produced!

It may well be true that it takes more energy to propel a car 30 miles than it does take a man to walk that distance but it's the very fact that we can harness the energy in petrol to make the the petrol engine much more efficient than man, which in turn has made it the success and LABOUR SAVING device it is
.

I think this illustrates perfectly why it is useless to try to discuss any subject in here. The closed minds with the loudest voices will always drown anybody else out.
