I only do the Tweeky camp I am one of Losts unaffected by advertising promotions and all that stuff people. Dont do fashion dont do buying the latest technology or any of that rubbish. If shops want Christmas decoration and sales stuff up do I care? I think not. Do I notice? Nah, I just get the bread and the cauliflower and head to the check out same as normal. Does it bother me that it annoys other people? No, in fact I find mildly amusing that it annoys other people icon_twisted.gif In fact I may just start humming Christmas tunes loudly as I skip around my local Asda.

Is it just me or is this Kent's opening gambit on every thread ? icon_lol.gif surely given the festive nature of this thread it should be changed to "Bah Humbug".

Bah humbug my arse.

If you have kids I am sure going out in the holidays like right now for kids, must be a nightmare for parents.

It is a festive thread, but in October ffs.
.

I do have kids, I'm a single dad, but they also know if I say no I mean it. IF they try and pressure me into anything it backfires on them, so they're pretty good. There's no nightmare here ( well maybe at Halloween )

I agree it's too soon for the Dec's but as I don't go to the shops that often it's not a big issue to me. The thing is if it didn't have an effect they wouldn't do it and the effect must be large enough to show on the finances or the top brass wouldn't care.

It is down to individuals and taking responsibility for their own lives.

It is so much easier to blame others than take responsibility for your own decisions. But thats the way we seem to be moving. Thankfully not everyone but enough for it to seem that lots are like that. Their weakness feeds the retailers who do what retailers do.....retail.

I plan and keep within my budget. When I buy is dependant on many factors but when they put it in the stores is not one of them. That is just a convenience to me.

Well all i can say Dave is by and large your in the f*cking minority. Come off it your telling me that no marketing and advertising effects the way you spend? I apologise for being cynical but that's hard to believe. Your telling me that smelling fresh bread in supermarkets has no subliminal effects or that a favourite racing driver advertises a car or car product cant influence you in how you make a purchase or pictures in magazines for holidays or the endless things it could be. Surely we are all victims of consumerism to a lesser or greater degree.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's a f*cking good job in a capitalist society that the populace is subject to the persuasions of commerce or else capitalism would be bolloxed and it most certainly isn't, its thriving. If a person has time to analyse everything they purchase or even extol the these things to others then they must live in some sort of million hour day.

Of course its all our own fault that we are subject to these things but hang on a minute. I can be persuaded by a quicker cleverer mind who can argue something better than me so I capitulate and end up agreeing with them but thats not to say they are right just that they are clever and quicker than me. So it is with advertising and business, they pick weaknesses and exploit them.

Who is at fault if one person is more clever or more persuasive than another and sells them something that maybe not needed but have been convinced they do? The quicker witted one for using their skill to advantage or the gullible one for having it happen to them eh? How do you classify the gullible one, in the wrong for not being as clever as the clever one? That smells of nasty to me.

Sometimes the self righteous people of the world should just so thank their lucky stars as its all just so easy and perfect for them. However, in my world we live with our faults and our foibles for good or bad but at least its not so wholesome a sanctimonious not to have come straight out of a bottle of Dettol as to be so clinical that if all of us were that way, Aldous Huxley and a myriad of other people, could not of written the books they did because we'd already be there living in them!

The difference between me and others Lost is that I recognise what they do. Do I fall for it? In some instances I will but I made that decision and I take responsibilty for that action. I do not blame others for that.

- Paper Jamz Guitar (£24.99)
- "Pumpaloons" - action game (£19.99)

Well I guess I must be lucky cos just like me ( and Dave_Notts ) my kids aren't swayed by the add's as I've shown them how to see through the hype to what they want rather than what they're fed in the ad's. None of those things are on the kids radar.

It might not be xmas yet but I can still appreciate that vid though. good stuff icon_smile.gif

thumbup.gif We have told mini Meeko that he is getting no presents this year. Santa has been made redundant due to the cuts in the public sector by the Tory goverment.

I think that recognising what is being done is most of the way to resisting ...

The smell of fresh baked bread makes me happy ....it doesn`t make me want to buy stuff ffs !!

I used to think Iggy Pop was quite cool until he started trying to sell me car insurance.

I can`t believe people change their personal choices because of advertising ....it`s just weird ....nothing self righteous about it !

There's nothing stopping anyone doing their Christmas shopping at any time of year. It doesn't need to be splattered across the shops at this time of year. There was Christmas wrapping paper for sale in the shops in Edinburgh in September. Do your shopping whenever you like, but surely it's not such a big problem to wait till Christmas time to buy your wrapping paper? Or buy it in the January sales for the following year if you need to count the pennies.

I buy mine along with cards and any decorations in January at reduced prices, not because I might need to count the pennies, it just makes more sense in my world, I know that's sorted for the next year and I can't resist a bargain icon_lol.gif

That's the choice of the people. The choice of the retail market is to do it as early as possible and exploit the minds of children and dement the minds of parents.

I bought a box of chocolates for a friend's birthday a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't till I got home and started wrapping them that I noticed that they were Christmas chocolates. The box was pale blue but had baubles on it. icon_rolleyes.gif

It'll teach me to be a little more observant but I don't want Christmas chocolates in October!

The Dome in George Street has had its Christmas decorations up for at least three weeks.

There's just no need. icon_confused.gif 1st December is plenty soon enough.

*firmly in the bah humbug camp*

I have not seen any decorations up anywhere yet but I don't like to see then until December
