They won't need the security number on the back to make an Internet purchase.
All the websites I have used require the 3 digit number eg play.com et al.
Majority fo websites require this now as they know they are liable to lose money if the card is counterfeit/stolen.
That was one of the reasons why the 3 digit number was used. as you had to be in posession of the card to make the purchase.
Well, obviously the websites I use are not so careful
I ordered hotel accomodation recently over the phone and wasn't asked the security number, so I guess the practice doesn't happen that often
NN - yes, I wondered about the fact that an Internet purchase would have to be delivered to "somewhere" and that "somewhere must be a real place! I guess we shall see when the bank get back to me with more details.
I can't see how they could have purchased the phone any other way than the Net though......... I mean would someone really pinch my card for long enough to go to a phone shop and buy one over the counter? I guess they could say they forgot the PIN and fraud my sig instead.......... but then they would have had to put it back in my wallet without me noticing.... and even I'm not that dizzy........ or am I?

i think either way they bough it the fact is the chances are this is someone you know quite well, either a good friend or a family member cause, be honest, would you leave your wallet laying around for long enough for someone to used your bank card with someone you didn't feel you could trust?
And i think that would bother me more than the money going missing to be hoesnt

If Virgin had their act together, they could trace the phone by using it's IMEI number and tell the police fairly accurately where it is next time it's used. Sadly, I don't think Virgin do have thier act together.

I had a credit card cloned last Christmas, which I discoverd when I got my January statment. Unfortunately for the master criminal that did it he picked a card that I only use for bigger business expenses and the restaurant I used it at was the only place I had used it in three months! Busted!
What did amuse me though were the purchases (all on the internet), three lots of software and ...........
some sheet music!!

Well yes, but if they're turned on with a SIM card in them then they're communicating with at least one cell, often two or three. The technology used can give an indication of the signal strength (so it knows when to change cells as you move around) which tells you roughly how far the 'phone is from the cell it's communicating with. If you've got data from two or three cells then finding the 'phone is a simple matter of drawing a few circles on a map and seeing where they intersect.
