Just out of interest, how did a mobile ringtone company, beloved by teenagers and loathed by parents and sane commuters grin.gif find, purchase and take over a swingers site? confused.gif

I suppose my only surprise is that....people are surprised icon_eek.gif was there really that kind of naivity around that folk thought the place would plod on forever without a commercial gain being made or being sought?....surely not.

Like everyone else I can only guess at events, but if you guess at a site starting out in a small way, with the owners not really knowing how it would grow and form itself, but then finding perhaps to thier surprise that the time and effort and I will also guess at a bit of cost as well, has made it grow into something that is much bigger than they envisaged and into something that now has a workload thats seriously impinging on life and a commercial value that can't be ignored, what would you do?...yep sell it! and why not. What the hell is so wrong about realising a worth on something you own and deciding to take that worth to provide for you and your own, cos I'm buggered if I can find fault in that.

So now there are new owners and those owners are going to try and make a shilling or two with thier new purchase. They have made thier initial announcement and already a few sticks and stones have been chucked over the walls at em. commercialism, greed, scammers, blah, blah, blah, well so what, someone sees an opening, sees an oppurtunity to add to thier existing business does the leg work splashes out the dosh and thats ohhh so wrong?....eerm no it isnt, its real life, you might not like it but thats pretty much how the world works, someone puts in the work, some starting capital and a business is born and on the back of that with a bit of luck comes a copper or two, ohhh and that terrible word as well....shall I say it?...shall I? ..go on then say it.....PROFIT.

Change can often be unpallatable, we all like the comfort of what we know, but change is ineviatable in nearly everything we do, touch and get involved in, sometimes for the better sometimes for the worse, but as sure as eggs are eggs it is with us all.

I ain't trying to piss on peoples concerns, but thus far its been said that the existing membership is gonna be uneffected, sort of tuped over and thats fine by me and if the time comes that the place changes into something that I don't like, or into something I can't afford, then I will open that same door that I opened when I walked into the place...the one marked 'free' and gently shut it behind me.

Best of luck to the old owners and best of luck to the new.

A very sensible post, Dave.

SH may be a community, but it isn’t a commune. We don’t all have equal rights and it’s not actually OUR site. I have been a member for long time (I was the eleventh person to join) and, during that time there have been many things I have enjoyed about SH and a number that I have not. Above all, however, I have been conscious of the fact that, basically, someone was providing something for me for nothing.

The fact that SH is about to change need not, in the short term at least, mean that the changes will be bad for existing members. Nobody spends money to buy something in order to change it in order to destroy it, particularly when that thing is as intangible as a web-based service. When the Swing2Us swingers site became a pay site, existing members retained their free membership and continued to provide the backbone of the site, which (I believe) got better.

I appreciate the commitment made by Elliot in saying that we, as existing members, will not be called upon to pay for membership and am prepared to wait and see how things develop. If I don’t like it I can just walk away – and it still won’t have cost me anything. A shame, perhaps, but that’s the reality of the situation …………….. and there’s nothing I can do about it.

Can't be arsed to read through all the posts in this thread, Morbius has pretty much filled me in (ooer) .......

My thoughts are thus ......

The new site owners have hopefully paid the previous site owners a considerable premium, and hopefully it goes as a reward to Mark and his family. Setting up a website years ago that has grown into a monster and must eat into their time and presumably resources considerably. Thanks to Mark I have a whole new lifestyle and friends to share that with icon_smile.gif I hope whatever he puts his mind to in the future is as successful.

The new site owners having paid for this site, must realise that by introducing to many changes and changing the essence that is SH, would be detrimental to their investment. I too have seen a home grown website sold off (for over a million too icon_eek.gif ) and the new owners come in and interfere too much with the balance immediately. Time and patience from both owners and community should lead to improvements for both .

I can't comment about membership charges and will refrain from doing so as I feel that the promise of no charges for a year (possibly for life) needs to be tested.

Important words to the new owners, this whole community is based on trust, we trust each other to protect each other, to remain confidential and primarily to respect each other, and that's why it works so well as a community. Please remember this and treat us the same, listen to us, hear us and respect us and I'm sure you won't go far wrong.

There will be a lot of ill feeling as I'm sure you have expected. Some of us will be worried about our lifestyles being criticised, displayed, disrespected, some of us will worry about losing friends, money, some of us will be concerned about our privacy. Bear with us and we will bear with you. Please be as transparent as you can be with us, you will win a friends of us then.

Please don't change the essence of our site, we are creatures of habit and shock changes will disturb us ..... we're interested in your ideas, and we may well have some of our own icon_wink.gif

Good luck ......

To my friends in the community ~ WE make this site work, we make this a community, it shouldn't matter who the owners are (although certainly what they do with it matters), we are the ones that count and work to keep the balance. Only by whispering in corners or splintering off will this community fall apart. PLease .. lets just suck it and see ..... for the time being.

Bl**dy Hell icon_eek.gif

Just got home, and read this icon_cry.gif

Have to say I am very cynical. I'm guessing the new owners are not into this 'lifestyle' and so are not here for their pleasure icon_cry.gif

I guess if all else fails, those of us down here in the Devon / Cornwall area can organise our own events without the site, just by contacting each other icon_biggrin.gif

I guess time will tell on what happens to the site icon_confused.gif

Elliot. icon_biggrin.gif

Elliot just a quickie whilst there is a bit of a lull,

I'm looking to make a lemon meringue pie this evening, but have always failed in the past. The meringue never seems to come out light, stiff and crisp, it generally ends up very thin and still a bit wet. Do you think the problem is in the preperation of the egg whites alone, or do you think that there might also be a problem with cooking temperature? dunno.gif

Oh my goodness! icon_eek.gif

I've just got oin and looked at the news - after 2 text messages from friends on here.

It all sounds very worrying and terrible. icon_sad.gif

I am hoping that the new owners will take the time to listen to everyone here. I am hoping that they will take people's views into account. After all, if they change it too much and we all leave, that won't benefit them at all will it?

I thinkl the new owners should come to the next few munches - or maybe we should hold an open meeting or something?

Oh. I just hate this icon_sad.gif

A few people have asked who the company is that has purchased this site.

Maybe I am wrong, but I think it is a requirement of the E-Commerce Directive / Electronic Commerce Regulations 2002 that this information has to be included on the site.

The UK version states as follows :

"6. - (1) A person providing an information society service shall make available to the recipient of the service and any relevant enforcement authority, in a form and manner which is easily, directly and permanently accessible, the following information -

(a) the name of the service provider;

(b) the geographic address at which the service provider is established;

(c) the details of the service provider, including his electronic mail address, which make it possible to contact him rapidly and communicate with him in a direct and effective manner;

(d) where the service provider is registered in a trade or similar register available to the public, details of the register in which the service provider is entered and his registration number, or equivalent means of identification in that register;"

When they refer to 'information society service' that they mean businesses operating on the web, which a commercial version of Swinging Heaven would most definately be.

I am only mentioning this as I am really curious to find out who the new company is. Come on Elliott, tell tell tell.
