AKA The Film Critics Thread.
As we're such a diverse crowd on here I thought it might be useful to have a thread where we could discuss and critique current cinema offerings.
I'll kick it off with:
After all the hype this film has received in the media I have to say I was expecting far more. I know the promos usually show you all the best parts of the film, but in this case that doesn't apply because all the best 'parts' were too adult for general consumption. At three hours long I was expecting more of an epic, but it really was just a long film. It could easily have been condensed into ninety minutes with little detriment to the plot line, and what started as a packed theatre soon started to thin down as people got bored and walked out - something I haven't seen before.
Whilst I understand the script called for a lot of bad language, I feel it reached the point where it was being thrown in just to elongate the dialogue. Perhaps if it had been moderated the film could have been considerably shorter.
Apart from a couple of noticeably comical scenes, the film was bland and uninspired. Leonardo was exuberant throughout, but at the end of the day he was just portraying an arse. That arse, by the way, turns out to be based on real life, and this is the portrayal of a man who made his millions from the misery of others. This film seems to be continuing that ethos, and no doubt lined his pockets even further.
The only highlight of the film was the amount of gratuitous nakedness on show, including full frontals from the eminently gorgeous Margot Robbie (of Neighbours and Pan Am fame). However, in deference to her poor American accent they did have to throw in an obvious explanation up front stating that her character was of mixed heritage.
The only other lift was the appearance of the still good looking Joanna Lumley as the English auntie, and having her snog with Leo must have made his day!
So, Mr Scorsese, you get a big fat 3 out of 10 from me. Must try harder!
