AKA The Film Critics Thread.
As we're such a diverse crowd on here I thought it might be useful to have a thread where we could discuss and critique current cinema offerings.
I'll kick it off with:

After all the hype this film has received in the media I have to say I was expecting far more. I know the promos usually show you all the best parts of the film, but in this case that doesn't apply because all the best 'parts' were too adult for general consumption. At three hours long I was expecting more of an epic, but it really was just a long film. It could easily have been condensed into ninety minutes with little detriment to the plot line, and what started as a packed theatre soon started to thin down as people got bored and walked out - something I haven't seen before.
Whilst I understand the script called for a lot of bad language, I feel it reached the point where it was being thrown in just to elongate the dialogue. Perhaps if it had been moderated the film could have been considerably shorter.
Apart from a couple of noticeably comical scenes, the film was bland and uninspired. Leonardo was exuberant throughout, but at the end of the day he was just portraying an arse. That arse, by the way, turns out to be based on real life, and this is the portrayal of a man who made his millions from the misery of others. This film seems to be continuing that ethos, and no doubt lined his pockets even further.
The only highlight of the film was the amount of gratuitous nakedness on show, including full frontals from the eminently gorgeous Margot Robbie (of Neighbours and Pan Am fame). However, in deference to her poor American accent they did have to throw in an obvious explanation up front stating that her character was of mixed heritage.
The only other lift was the appearance of the still good looking Joanna Lumley as the English auntie, and having her snog with Leo must have made his day!
So, Mr Scorsese, you get a big fat 3 out of 10 from me. Must try harder!
We don't tend to see movies when they are new, we are the ones who by the DVD or watch it on Sky when it comes on, but old films well, if you liked
The Shawshank Redemption
The Green Mile
Field of Dreams
Cool Runnings
You obviously enjoy films with a difference, so we highly recommend
The Worlds Fastest Indian
8 Below
Babe (as in the story of Babe Ruth not the pig)
Just watched captain Phillips on Movie channel, loved it, cant be bothered to write a review, suffice to say it had me on the edge of my seat smile
Never failed to attend a movie with Tom Hanks in it, I bought the DVD of the Green Mile simply because I saw he was in it, never read the back to see what it was about just let it all unfold on my screen, so much better when you can do that because the whole movie is a surprise and it was such a good movie, I like movies that are different or true stories, like those I mentioned above, The Worlds Fastest Indian and Babe.
Could say the same about Nicholas Cage too especially the Rock and Leaving Las Vegas, I like John Wayne but he would have to eat the peanuts out their ass to be as diverse smile

Did anyone see Coach Trip today and if so can you name the movie from which the violinst played the theme tune ?
I watched THE LONE RANGER with Jhonny Depp in other day......
What a great film.....never expected it to be so funny !!! I loved the lone ranger series as a kid and was expecting the same sort of thing.....but I was smiling and giggling all the way through.....highly recommended. Jhonny Depp plays Tonto the red indian and plays him in a very similar way to his Jack Sparrow pirate type character.
Jed, I really enjoyed 'The World's Fastest Indian' when I saw it a few years ago, but I guess most films with Tony Hopkins in are worth a punt. Speaking of which, I caught his portrail of 'Hitchcock' recently. The character was extremely convincing due to a great makeup job and his spot on accent, but the story line didn't manage to keep me watching for long.
Kat, you're not the first to recommend Captain Phillips, so I think that one will have to go on my watch list. You can bring the popcorn! ;)
You know what Dean, I never considered 'The Lone Ranger' as being one I'd go for, but it sounds like I might have to reconsider now. smile
As above, added the Lone Ranger and Captain Phillips to my list of popcorn list.
I was beginning to think I was the only one who had seen the indian film and if any of you have not heard of it, all I can say it is not what you are thinking it is lol whatever you are thinking it is and if you know what the worlds fastest indian is you don't have to enjoy the subject to enjoy the film.
The Worlds Fastest Indian was a good film. Quite enjoyed it.
Captain Phillips 7/10 Ok entertainment, nothing exceedingly bad about it
Gravity 7/10 again OK entertainment
The East 6/10
Oblivion 8/10 got poor reviews, and I don't know why, great film very enjoyable even with the cruiser in it

Have to disagree, I'm a scifi nut and MrsG can put up with the genre so Oblivion was a must see. Reminded us of the film within Mr Beans Holiday. long drawn out silences, no plot, little action. End was different but regret the 90 mins or so to get there.
Dallas Buyers Club
great film and made better by the fact its a true story, well worth the watch 9/10
