sad to hear the news today the 70's and 80's tv star Lewis Collins has died after his long battle with cancer.
he was 67. he died in los angeles with his family by his side.
for those that are to young to remember Collins was one of the stars in the hit TV show The professionals about a crime fighting unit called CI5.
Lewis played hard man bodie and was suited to the role for his mean, menacing no nonsense hard hitting approach.
Collins was also tipped to play James bond and had an interview for the role but was deemed to be to violent for the films.
Also it is little known that collins Passed the royal marines combat fitness test and also passed the tough examination to join the SAS but was turned down because of his TV fame and well known face.
A keen parachute jumper Collins was a real life all round hard man who not only played the part on TV but backed it up with his training.
After The professionals Collins appeared on the west end stage and also in the film 'who dares wins' as SAS captain Peter Skellen to which he put his past knowledge on weapons and tactics to good use.
after acting he set up a successful computer business with his family.
Good looking, a fighter and with a dry sense of humour Lewis Collins was the man who should have played Bond.
RIP
that's sad news. very sad. he would have made a good bond. maybe to ahead of his time at a time when bond was still a bit ooerrr missus and not really the tough no nonsense guy he is today.
rip.
very very sad news, I loved that programme, we were allowed one hour of telly a week and The Professionals as one of the ones that got the extended viewing time ccc
... and quite surprisingly for an actor of his calibre, he remained with the same partner for the whole of his married life.
A real star.
A great actor, shame he never got the Bond role.
He was one of my childhood heroes- made me want to be the adventurous type. Pity he didn't do more acting he'd have been great in some of the new stuff- 'spooks' and the like. Stopped me in my tracks when i heard the news. VVV sad day for me.
