Sorry, the USB threading problem comes about because of Service pack 2. (see earlier in posts).
MSN and may not log in from your works because they may have their own network firewall that blocks the ports required, this is typical.

I also never give a phone number out on a first (sometimes second) reply. An Email address is easier to filter than a phone number should someone decide to hassle you or sell your details.
Some will give out phone numbers willy-nilly and I am always dubious of ads that ask for phone numbers.

Options (terminology) with Netgear routers are slightly different, eg, Encapsualtion option is PPPoA and Multiplexing is VC based (VC-Mux)
Netgear gateway router also requires the IP address assigned to you by your ISP. These gateway routers are NOT very good at picking up the IP automatically from the ISP. Hence it is better to get your IP address from Pipex for ease of configuration.
Your internal network addreses will be automatic.
EDIT: Firmware version for DG834 overcomes automatic detection problem of IP address from ISP
