JUST A COMMON SOLDIER
( A Soldier Died Today )
by
A. Lawrence Vaincourt
He was getting old and paunchy and his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion, telling stories of the past.
Of a war that he had fought in and the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies; they were heroes, every one.
And tho' sometimes, to his neighbours, his tales became a joke,
All his Legion buddies listened, for they knew whereof he spoke.
But we'll hear his tales no longer for old Bill has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer, for a soldier died today.
He will not be mourned by many, just his children and his wife,
For he lived an ordinary and quite uneventful life.
Held a job and raised a family, quietly going his own way,
And the world won't note his passing, though a soldier died today.
When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing and proclaim that they were great.
Papers tell their whole life stories, from the time that they were young,
But the passing of a soldier goes unnoticed and unsung.
Is the greatest contribution to the welfare of our land
A guy who breaks his promises and cons his fellow man?
Or the ordinary fellow who, in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his Country and offers up his life ?
A politician's stipend and the style in which he lives
Are sometimes disproportionate to the service that he gives.
While the ordinary soldier, who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal and perhaps, a pension small.
It's so easy to forget them for it was so long ago,
That the old Bills of our Country went to battle, but we know
It's not the politicians, with their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom that our Country now enjoys.
Should you find yourself in danger, with your enemies at hand,
Would you want a politician with his ever shifting stand?
Or would you prefer a soldier, who has promised to defend
His home, his kin and Country and would fight until the end?
He was just a common soldier and his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us that we may need his like again.
For when countries are in conflict, then we find the soldier's part
Is to clear up all the troubles that the politicians start.
If we cannot do him honour while he's here to hear the praise,
Then, at least let's give him homage at the ending of his days.
Perhaps just a simple headline in a paper that would say,
Our Country is in mourning, for a soldier died today !
everyone is entitled to their opinion and i do not think what my father did was in any way irrelevent I have his photos taken from the landing craft as it hit the beach in normandy (he was the pilot so made several landings) and to look at them still send a shiver down my spine.
just to think what all those young guys and any that go to war go through deserves remembrance regards of political stance or prejudice.
I remember every year and always will.
we both get nervous before meeting people for the first time but it is a kind of nervous excitement and in some way is all part of the fun (if thats the right way to explain it)
people that use the phrase "first to see will buy" how do they know FFS!!!!!
people that drive on sidelights I mean why not put the headlights on its not like it is costing you for the electric
december is def plenty soon enough to start
these days with it starting so early in the year i am completely pissed off with it by the time the actual day arrives

Well yes, if you're at the popular end of SH, vis young, female, or vwe you can afford to take that view, but for myself any response would be better than being ignored, and even if you are at the popular end and have (say) 30 replies from single males, how many take the trouble to offer an individual reply to all?

who says we are at the popular end of SH
we reply to ayone who messages us personally but what we are saying is that if you can only be bothered to send an automated message (completely impersonal)then surely you cannot expect anyone to take the time to write a message in reply
completely agree with vampanya if you can be bothered to do no more than press a button for an automated reply then dont bother at all
surely even people with busy lives can find a few minutes to write something and if not how do they expect to find time to meet up
automated replies just breed timewasters and god knows there are enough already
thats our thoughts anyway
hey
thanks everyone carsons magic it is then, we will get some ordered and give it a go
the cream that is redface

Can anyone recommend a good Depilatory cream for the more sensitive areas and does it really work.
We have read some good reports on the net but also some horror stories and would like to know more, shall we say from the horses mouth, before applying to the tenderist of regions.
