We had a brill night last ninght. A big thanx to those that organised and those that participated. We met lots of old friends, met several new ones, put loads of faces to names, added a few people to our must-shag list, and got snogged to death all night. What more could anyone wish for? Thanx again.

Great list.

Why thank you kind sir... however... you set the challenge... so... excuse me... (ahem)
Where is your list then?!?!?!
Wibbly with soul!
my list is further up the thread.
And (shudder, shudder, shudder) Muriel Day was responsible for Nine times out of ten. And there was an even worse cover version out on Inferno. See my earlier posts about Inferno!

Bob

not an anorak - a geek with a demim cut-off covered in soul patches if u please!
OK folks - here's a challenge - as if life wasn't short enough already. It's a little vexing problem that has bugged me for years. Someone please sit down and work out ALL the lyrics to The Fantastic Puzzles - Come back. I know about 75% of em. The rest is a mystery!
Would this be 'It really hurts me girl' that you are refering to? Great track that somehow sneaked its way off Red Coach and got a UK release on Inferno. Then they re-mixed it as a 12" er. DOH!
WibblyWobbly - Words fail me (Theres a change).
Great list.

The ones i like, not necessarily my top all time favs, but, hey!
1. All Night Band -- Wigan Joker
2. Sly And The Family Stone -- Dance To The Music
3. Freda Payne -- Band Of Gold
4. R. Dean Taylor -- There's A Ghost In My House
5. Wigans Ovation -- Skiing In The Snow
6. Just Brothers -- Sliced Tomatoes
7. Martha Reeves -- 3rd Finger Left Hand
Maybe not your purists choices but oi loiks em!!

ok - dont take this personally - lol - its for Harry's benefit.
1 never a northern track as long as i have got a hole in my bum. A cheap cash in attempt by Casino Classics after Butch Bakers The Joker went massive. You will never hear either of these trax played anywhere now thankfully.
2 Good cross over track. Charted yet still got a few plays on the scene both as a vocal and as an instrumental.
3 Soul Artist - Soul Label - Wedding reception song. Even tho it's about divorce. I could never understand that.
4 Massive crossover hit, both sides getting huge amounts of needle time. Now played out.
5 Clone of the Invitations track. yeurk!
6 Played to death instrumental. Everyone and his brother owns a copy. Still popular at oldies events.
7 Motown pop song.
Having read the above I sound like a vinyl snob. I probably am. At the end of the day though, you listen to the music you like. But there is much better soul hiding away from the mainstream if you want to go and look for it.

Glad to hear there are other soul brothers and sisters out there, although I prefer mine a little more Detroit than Manchester!! lol
Or a bit of Teddy Prendergast, Lamont Dozier, Curtis Mayfield, The Jones Girls, Average White Band etc etc.
While you are on the subject? Anyody here attend the Caister Soul Weekenders? If so, we may well have met before!!

Philly Soul mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Anyway - heres a go @ a top 5. I reserve the right to change my mind every ten minutes for the rest of my life tho. Would you prefer the real name/artist or the cover up version tho? Here we go
1 Court Davis - Try to think
2 The Pages - Heartaches and pain
3 Lee Moore - Your love keeps me dancing
4 George Clinton - Please don't run from me
5 Mel Britt - she'll come running back
6 Rose Valentine - When he's not around
ok ok - i couldnt keep it to 5.
At least you managed to get three northern tracks into your top seven lol

Mind you - You could always listen to Soft Cell murdering Tainted love, or What. Or Yazz's version of The only way is up. lol

I don' want to turn this into a crap covers of Northern Soul tracks thread...but I see your Yazz and raise you a Fatboy Slim Rockafella Skank.
ill raise u to the roof
Gary Glitter doing Papa Ohh Mow Mow and Slade doing Let the good times roll!!
Ok - heres a challenge for you all - post ur all time northern top five.
This should be interesting.
We had 'new' northern once before and it was not good for the scene. Listen to any of the following 'created' northern tracks and tell me how many have stood the test of time:-
Footsie - Wigans chosen few
Skiing in the snow - Wigans Ovation (Listen to the Invitations version if u must)
Anything on the Soul Galore label (Almost).
Some of the manufactured dross on Grapevine/Inferno/Casino Classics/Disco Demand/Black Magic. (there are some genuine classics mixed in amongst these labels so be wary!)
So thanx but no thanx. Blinkers on, gimme the real thing.
Mind you - You could always listen to Soft Cell murdering Tainted love, or What. Or Yazz's version of The only way is up. lol
Sorry guys - plastic, pretend, manufactured plagarism.
Listen to the real thing - there is no substitute.
Nice to see that there are actually soulies out there that are on this scene as well.
I guess that all-nighter feeling applies to both camps lol

Hello all
Please excuse my ignorance (I am only 30) but the only thing I know about Northern Soul is that when I was trawling E-bay for some decent sew on patches (I got Slade, Blondie and Quo) there were thousands of these Northern Soul ones. Can anyone link me or explain succinctly what Northern Soul is.
Cheers
Harry Jones

There are loads of web sites out there that will attempt to explain what northern is - try this one for starters :-
Northern Soul - Like sex but for your ears.
