Well it all depends on how much dosh you want to spend.
So lets say for £40,000
Car = Merc CLK with all the gadets and leather
4x4 = VW Touareg with all gadets and leather
For 25,000 to 30,000
Car = Audi A6, BMW series 5 or a Jag S type
4x4 = Landrover Discovery
For 20,000 to 25,000
Car = Audi A4, Jag X type, BMW Series 3 all with gadets and full leather
4x4 = Toyota Rav 4 or Mitsubusi shogun
For 18,000 to 20,000
Car = passat or Audi A3
4x4 = you will be lucky to find a decent new one.
But if you just want a good quality cheap one the how about the new skoda octivia as top model price is under £18,000 with all gadets inc sat nav (to find the best places) and leather. These must be good cars as the traffic police in 5 counties have them (For their sheer performance)!!!
