"The way my marriage had developed, I should have known something would go wrong."

Sarah and I were childhood sweethearts. We grew up together in the same small town and, although we went off to different universities, we were in love so we stayed in touch and, when it came to graduation time, we both assumed we would both seek jobs in the same general area. We married before we were 25 years of age and, both having well paid jobs, we were confident to buy a brand new house with a thumping great mortgage. Sarah worked as a teacher in a local school, a fairly secure job, and I was (and still am) an engineer at a manufacturing business, which is also well paid.

We had been married a little over 3 years, and I was starting to wonder how long it would be before Sarah started to become broody. We seemed to have the perfect life together. Then Sarah dropped her bombshell – for more than a year, she had been having an affair with a social worker she had met through the school. What hurt more than anything was that her new love is a woman. Sarah told me that she would be moving out to set up home with her. Needless to say, I was devastated.

I quickly realised I could not afford the mortgage on my salary alone, so I put the house on the market and moved to a 1970's semi-detached house in a totally different part of town. Taking into account the costs of moving, I barely made a profit, but at least Sarah didn't ask for any of the proceeds.

So, I settled into my new way of life as a single man. Financially, I was reasonably comfortable and, once bitten twice shy, I didn't want any love interest in my life. My demanding job kept me busy, and there were many things I wanted to do in the house to get it just the way I wanted.

I gradually got to know many people in the street, and made a few good friends, in particular the couple next door, who were very sociable. One of them told me that they were both approaching 50 years of age, although I thought Judy looked much younger, not much more than 40. She seemed to be a bit of a gym-bunny, about 5'2” in height, slim and fit, and it would be the highlight of my day when I occasionally noticed Judy hanging out her washing from my back bedroom window. As she stretched up to reach the washing line, her skirt would pull up at the back, almost revealing her stocking tops (but maybe they were tights after all).

A couple of times, I heard raised voices next door through the wall. I didn't take too much notice as it wasn't a stand-up row with things being thrown, just a normal marital disagreement. Then, one Saturday afternoon when Dave had gone to a football match, Judy knocked on my door and asked if she could talk to me. She was clearly worried about something, so I invited her in for a cup of tea.

Judy started by saying it was a very delicate matter, but she felt she had 'painted herself into a corner'. She explained that Dave wanted them to start swinging and had signed them up to a swingers website without telling her initially. Dave was pushing Judy to meet single men, with whom he wanted them to have a threesome, but she was totally against the idea, hence their disagreements. I was beginning to wonder how she thought I could help, when Judy said that, at the height of their row a couple of evenings ago, she had said she would rather have sex with me than any of Dave's choices from the internet.

We sat there in silence for what seemed like an eternity, whilst we both gathered our thoughts. Judy went on to explain that Dave thought I would be a bad idea, as it was too close to home for them, so Judy had decided to push the idea of me becoming involved with them. She said she wanted to tell Dave that she had invited me round, perhaps one evening next week to …......... give her a good seeing to.

I wasn't too sure how serious Judy was, but the absence of any female company since the split with my ex-wife more than a year ago prompted me to say yes. Before she left, Judy gave me a hug and even a peck in the lips – and she did taste nice - but I wasn't too sure exactly what was going through her mind.

During the following few days, I went through in my mind every conceivable outcome to the following Friday's get together, including the possibility that Judy might call it off beforehand, or even that it might end in me falling out with them, thus losing my best friends in the street. By the Tuesday, I had decided it was impossible to predict and I would have to just 'go with the flow'.

To be continued.
