As far as I'm aware - chat hasn't changed.
Have you tried the usual stuff? Cleared ya cache, history, updated flash?
Are you using AOL? Some have had problems.
Other that, I'm afraid I can't help..sorry.

If using a Windows PC (especially Vista or W7) then updating to Flash 10.1 beta may help as it drastically reduces CPU requirements.
Flash 10.1 beta available here and I would suggest the logging fix be used with it details of which are available here
Try that out, and if still an issue let us know exactly what the prob is and we can sort it
