Given the 24 x 7 site availability and the fact that several site updates have occurred overnight, it's quite useful to update users with when things will be unavailable.
As for IT guru, having being involved as a manager/tech support for such systems, then this sort of pedantry is custom and practise for many sites, e.g. most online banking systems will carry a log on message advising when they'll be 'off-line' for maintenance and service status indicators will reflect this, both being good customer service and also reducing the numbers of support calls.
The SH support/admin team's work is greatly appreciated in continually developing and bringing forward fixes and enhancements.
