Have you downloaded an update to Skype recently? I had the same problem which I finally attributed to a Skype add on which had been automatically installed (even though I had unchecked the option box during installation). Using the uninstall files option got me working again.
If it's not Skype think if there are any other applications / add ons that you have installed recently.

Hi, - no I don't use and I haven't made any changes out of the ordinary to the system. The old chatroom works fine - it's the new beta chatroom that just gives the IE error and shuts IE and SH down.
Cleared the cookies, cleared the temp files, still the same problem
I will indeed try firefox and see if I have any joy.
Cheers

What i would suggest is this...
Firstly because spyware can install browser add on's that conflict with the more legit browser add on's i would download install and run both "Spybot - Search & Destroy" and "Ad-Aware" ( find them on ) and check you don't have any of this trash installed ( it can come from installing all sorts of free programs on the net like free screen savers, Kazaa and so on.
Also i have found a couple of tool bars ( them ones that sit at the top of your browser that offer pop up blockers and so on ) can also cause conflicts so it might be an idea to uninstall any of them temporarily till you find where the problem is
Then if you still have the problems click "start button" then then "settings" then "control panel" find the "add remove programs" shortcut and click that
uninstall both "flash players"
reboot system
then download and install a fresh copy of flash from here

when internet explorer you will get the option to download the tool bar also, it might be a good idea to leave that at least until you have found where the problem is.

IE is down to the usual microshaft standards - they rip other peoples work (mozilla et al) and cock it up - it's the usual microshite you should expect from them.
I wish more stuff was written for linux.........

Ok, so now I have tried firefox and it doesn't work either. It doesn't crash as such it just doesn't successfully load the flash player. The pop up screen appears and then it just sits there going nowhere.
No toolbars, pop up blockers or plugins running - I don't allow any of them. Already running ad-aware and it is clean. But the fact that both IE6 and firefox fail to load the chatroom, and other people obviously aren't having the same problems shows that it is indeed something on my machine.
Logic therefore states that it could indeed be the flash player.
Onward and upward - I will uninstall and re-install that and see if I get the same problem

Well wouldn't you know it
I uninstalled the flash player, re-installed it afresh - logged on to SH to try it and they have gone and removed the beta chatroom so I can't test it out.
Great - now I won't know if it works or not until the put it up again.
Ah well
Thanks everybody for your suggestions.
