Playstation 3 Chatroom trial

Out of curiosity I just tried my PS3 with the chatroom. I must say the Swingingheaven website in general is a nightmare on the PS3 sad

half of it does not load properly and you cant see profiles hardly at all.
Surprisingly the chat room works fine, once you have found the button to get in lol

as it does not load properly. I could chat with the PS3 and view cams even if it was a bit slow with the frame rate. I was not able to get the chatroom to detect the PS3's playstation eye camera but I am unexperienced with this device so will have to see later if I can get this working. It may need setting up in the ps3 menu external from chat, no idea.
Probably of no use to anyone but thought to report my findings. Was hoping the cam would work, that was my main aim. We have sofa bed in the front room where the PS3 is :rascal: so it was worth a try. Cat in hells chance of us getting busy in the over packed stock room where the PC is :(

It is indeed a games console thingy as you so put it

I will experiment more with it at some point in the future.

Most of them will connect to the net some with greater efficiency than others. Newer consoles i.e. the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are just PC's in disguise anyway. If you are tech minded enough you can make a Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 run Windows or linux and do just about everything a PC will do. Same goes for the original Xbox. The Sega Saturn first released in 1994 has a browser disc called planetweb, it ran on dial up. The later Sega Dreamcast console released in 1999 had updates on the planetweb browser for america and separate browsers for Japan and Europe. The Dreamcast had a Broadband adapter only released in Japan and USA, I have one of course :lol: Playstation 2 also had net access via broadband or dial up, broadband only in the uk.
Overall net access is big now for consoles. The browsers are as yet still shite but the whole net access thing is huge. You can rent movies buy games play 1 vs 100 all over the net on the new consoles. The idea is that they will be all in one home entertainment systems i.e. you should be able to buy music films games and socialize just using one console. Its kind of a scary thought that will progress more in the next generation of consoles.

Tweeky, you can get windows drivers so you can use the Eye as a (very good) pc webcam. It's a shame but on the slim ps3 you can't load a Linux OS anymore (my fat ps3 was running ubuntu but it's died 2 weeks ago). X360 can run linux but only certain versions, the hole in the firmware has been patched now and the way the hacker used to bypass the security isn' there anymore.
Have you play M.A.G. yet. I've dump MW2 for it. it's alot more team based and communication is the key to winning in this game compared to going 'lone wolf' in MW2.

I might get the drivers for the PS3 eye if I dont have a use for it on the PS3 as my PC web cam is shite
Ive no idea about using Linux on the PS3 or 360 I just knew it "could" be done. Its not something that holds a lot of interest for me. I would be interested in linux for the original Xbox though. I get loads of these in and they only sell for around £10 these days. I believe if you can get Linux on them and set them up as a media centre you can get £40 minimum for them. To be honest though it might be a bit to tech for me although I am finding I do more and more these days so who knows.
I have not tried MAG but it did look very interesting! Being a bit of a scrooge and waiting for a price drop.

Actually, there's no reason to put linux onthe old xbox, if it's got a mod chip or been 'soft-modded' just use XMBC (xbox media center). It's been the voted best media center software for the last few years and it's free.

I have now had several attempts with the PS3 in Swingingheaven chat. Although the Chat room works fine and cameras can be viewed its seems the Chatroom wont activate the PS3 camera, the Playstation eye. Ive ensured its all set up but no matter how many times you hit the camera button noting happens. Real shame, the Playstation eye is pretty groovy.
