So my son is doin this pooter malarky at college and today he has fitted a wireless router so he can have the pc on internet in his room.
Only prob is i seem to have terrible lag in chat and got chucked out too when i tried 2 switch rooms. Is it coincidence or the router?
Also if we are on a network can he tell what sites im visiting on the internet and see my faves etc?
Hope somone can help me..hard to tell son he cant use his pc cos i cant get into chat on my swinging site!!
If you notice the internet is super slow whilst using your computer at the same time as your son, I'd expect he is using the large majority of the bandwidth - downloading or uploading a file at the maximum speed available. You must remember that you are sharing the bandwidth now.
I've known in the past that a firewall turned on in a wireless router can cause problems in the chat room, this is worth considering if the problems are still happening if you are the only one connected to the router.
He shouldn't be able to see what web sites you are visiting. I know there's programs available on the internet that can do this but I think the chances are slim.
We know exactly what you going through mad
But hopefully you have more luck than us xxx
Thankyou , seems to be working today but i think he disconnected the router. Generally the internet was working it was just chat that didnt want to play!

Well with the speed of our connection recently, I'd probably be better off throwing away our home hub and plugging a fried egg in its place
All i wanna do is figure out how to check the firewall thingy ( i read on another thread that could be rthe prob..but i dont know where to look)and how do i know what speed i need. I know im on the slowest broadband from virgin..2 meg? The rest of the internet works just not the chatroom in here and i cant understand why.
OO my head hurts  son upset cos hes got an assignment due in tomorrow and i unplugged the router ...
A few questions if you please biggrin
First how far away are you from the router? and how many walls are you going through to get the connection? also is anyone using the connection besides you?
2. Is the router's wireless connection encrypted, you never know someone might be piggybacking the connection.
3. And as for getting hold of the websites you visit it is possible to capture the information but i doubt that he even knows about captuering let alone worried about what sites you visit.
4. To turn off the firewall in the router you need to acces the router by typing either 1.1 or 0.1 or 2.1 into a web browser
depending on the router model. The default login should be user: admin
password:admin
The firewall settings should be under the firewall options
If you have a netgear you will need to allow specifed services in and out you'll need to go
here:

However i doubt you would need to do this as forwarding ports and changing the firewall rules is normally reserved for games and other services.
I suspect that the problem is the signal strength or position of the router try moving it to a different postion and see if it alters in any way.
Hi, the router is on my desk and the tower unit is under it . so pretty close. I will try ur other suggetions now and let u know, thanks x
OOh ur so clever i have turned the firewall off now ans shall see if the chatroom works. Thankyou xxxxx
