I'm not sure whether I've got the point of what goes on entirely right.
I'm a currently single male who likes the idea of going along to watch a couple playing from a comfortable distance and maybe having a little fiddle in my pocket at the same time.

Something that some people (the couple) like?

Yeah the couple will no doubt love you visibly expressing your enjoyment of watching them, and who knows you might get more than that as well, but thats the whole idea of it, everybody to enjoy themselves within reason of course.
Yes its considered acceptable by the dogging community, you might not be the only one doing it either and yes its likely to happen if you keep your eyes open and have some patient and put in the hours.
Some couples will show only, some will play with one or two guys some will play with 15 or more in a night, depends on the couples and what they want. Best thing to do is to just get out there and be senisble and enjoy yourself, be polite and patient and you will sooner or later get rewarded.

So if I'm understanding it right, other than pre-arranged meets through somewhere like here, it's okay to go over to a known site on the off-chance as long as you don't mind hanging around a bit, keep your distance until invited and don't go scaring anyone?
Another thing, and this might sound really stupid here, is that I don't drive. Other than the obvious issues concerning personal safety wandering around in the dark at night, and the above issues of politeness is being on foot not the 'done thing' and if not should I take a torch to flash and make myself known?
Sorry if any of this sounds a bit silly, I just don't want to go spoiling anyones night.
I used to regularly cycle to a dogging spot near Cambridge (25 mins on my granny shopper) in my suit on a night when a couple were normally there.
It's a bastard when it's sleeting and you tend to panic that someones going to nick my bicycle or more importantly my briefcase with valuables in it while I'm busy but it worked.
Likewise I once used bicycle and train to get to a dogging spot about 25 miles away. Had no fun, gave all the regulars a bloody good laugh.
Asto on foot when one site got so rough to drive up I left my Mondeo about a mile away and walked the last part. I didn't take a torch, relying on the stars and moon and asking other people (is that a couple? You know my eyesight is crap).
I think if you flashed a torch about some would think you were a kid tossing about, but I would take one to find my way upto the site if I was on foot. Remember to wear black / dark clothes (dont forget and put white socks or trainers on).
As for waiting until you are invited, it's a difficult one, I know of one couple who sit and wait for peopel to come over to them, at least for chatting, obviously you need to wait till invited to start touching, but for the initial contact it's a difficult call to make, I still get it wrong at times. Start nearby then perhaps slowly wander over.
Above all Good luck and have patience, the endless of nights of being on your own for 4 hours get balanced out by the amazing nights.

Yeah it really is, its funny how theres a sense of triumph when after hours and hours or sometimes nights and nights of waiting when you do get to see something, a show or more, the feeling of success, being in the right place at the right time, rewarded for putting the time in and patience, being at such and such a site and seeing this and knowing theres others at a site nearby who are missing out all add up to make it a enjoyable experience.
Oh and of course watching or joining in as well with the couple helps of course.
For me it seems to go in cycles, a few quiet weeks since xmas and then all of a sudden two shows in the space of two nights, including two couples in the same car park on one of those nights.
You never ever know with this game, any given night you could be in the right place at the right time, or you could just miss the couple by 2 mins either way, thats how it is and always will be.
Yes it is as rewarding as its made out to be in short.
