24 hour drinking laws

So it seems that a new Government have agreed that the 24 hour drink laws will be scrapped, and pubs to go back to the hours they used to keep.

I am unsure as to making supermarkets only sell alcohol at cost, but it is obvious too that irresponsible drinkers are buying cheap booze from the supermarket, and getting pissed before they even go out.
The British booze culture has come about for many reasons, cheap booze from the likes of Tesco's has in my opinion added to the problem.
24 hour drinking has caused more problems than the past Government would ever admit, and there has to be a happy medium.
What do others feel about stopping the 24 hour open policy, and the supermarkets loss leading booze selling?
Once again though it is the few that spoil it for the rest. Most are responsible drinkers but as always the idiot few spoil it, and then we all have to pay the price for that.
Ah, the demon drink!
This one is a clear case of they will be damned if they do and damned if they don't!
On the continent of Europe, it's the choice of the bar owner as to what hours to keep. In many rural areas, bars will close at unless there is someone there helping to pay the rent. In the major conurbations, they will stay open no matter what because there will always be passing trade - even if it's just for a coffee at 4am.
I doubt changing the law back will change the piss-head culture of many late bar-goers to be honest. Society itself needs to change. Making pretty street café areas in the centre of many towns just provides a ready supply of projectiles to throw at shop windows by Britain's finest examples of the gentile CHAV class whereas their European counterparts rarely need to resort to such tactics to demonstrate a point.

The law allowed the application for 24 hr drinking but there were never a lot of places that were allowed to open 24hr. The checks and balances i.e. allowing objections by police, fire, Env Health, public, etc had most publicans keeping their original timings. Most rural publicans did not want extra hours due to the cost so only applied for the original hours.
The extra hours are usually at the clubs........and didn't they have extra hours anyway dunno.
So they can scrap the law, but it will still be the same problem. It is just a smoke screen by the papers and politicians. The problem is with the drinkers and the British culture of drinking to excess. That is what needs to change.........but feck knows how you go about that. Legislation will never change a culture.

En France, there is no ethnicity; that is the way of the Republique and long may it continue.
Personally I feel there are better ways to approach the issue. One way would be to charge a higher license fee to pubs that want to stay open 24 hours and limit the licenses that are issued. Regarding supermarkets selling cheap liquor personally I think it is utterly foolish. My feeling penalities for drink driving should be increased, a lower limit for intoxication, and stiff penalities for public intoxication should be instituted. The ones who abuse these rights are the ones that should be the price and it should not the % of us who follow the law.
I favour rigid drinking laws.
No drinking alcohol after 2300z, even at home.
Although quite how you're going to stop people buying cheap booze from Astesainswaitbudgwilks I do not know....and if they sold it at cost it would be cheaper still....the 4 can pack of Guinness costs the above less than ...the 4 can pack of cheap imported lager selling at costs less than It gets cheaper still for a 2 litre bottle of 4% cider....
Sorry, drunkenness is in the head in the UK. It replaces a Brain.
People on this forum are always moaning about this being a "nanny state" and losing our freedom to do as we please, so how is reverting this law any different?
I choose to drink on a regular basis both out and at home, i do not however get drunk.
I sometimes go out at 11 pm when most people are pissed and going home, but being able to actually go out at this time of night suits my lifestyle and working life, these licensing hours are far from unique to the UK i can go most places in the world and get a drink at 4am!
Why should the supermarkets not sell booze at whatever price they want, it is against the law to sell to under 18`s and i am sorry but the last time i looked anyone over the age of 17 is classed as an adult and responsible for there own lives and action.
We do not live in a muslim state (that again many on here critisise) and it is not against the law to drink, i can imagine the outrage on this forum if this was the Muslim leaders calling for booze bans or pub and club hours being cut!!
This is simply the poor weak government we did not vote for as a majority, trying to flex there weak little muscles and saying "look what we can do" there are so many more poor weak laws in this country that need to be changed, but no lets pick one that stops the people of this country doing what they want when they want, lets ban sex outside of marriage i say!!
And whilst i am ranting i see the government are now taking away free swimming for over 65`s and possibly kids, oh how caring and health conscious is that, bring on the fat kids, lets make sure that the oap`s cant stay fit if they can not afford it and die before they reach the new retirement age of 107 and the fat kids will obviously become obese adults and again die before retirement thus saving the country loads of money.
Welcome to the next 5 years of a government with no majority who are gonna take away all the fun things in life and make us work till we cant walk or breathe, i really am better off in Afghanistan!!

Well said
i run a bar and have an extension to the 11 o'clock licence if and when i need it for private functions, if we were to go back to the old system then i would have to go to court to get the extensions almost every week taking time and money. i know this is not what the thread is about its just from a licensees point of view the new laws as they are suit me fine as i dont have to apply for a later licence for some one else's function to be held at my bar, i also wouldnt have to inform the police of said function either as i had to in the past.
it is down to the individual licensee what hours they applied for and would only be granted if they could prove they are effective at keeping order and necessary for the premises. going back to the draconian hours that were implemented because of the munitions workers in the war in my opinion would only further serve to promote binge drinking and stretch police and hospital resources at kicking out times as was one of the reasons for the new 24 hour laws in the first place
I can't help but think that this has all been said before - our culture needs restrictions!
Plim wink
