And this is classed as soapbox material??? A highly emotive current affairs topic that you class as a rant??? I read 'soapbox' and I read rant and this thread is certainly not that! I, for one, feel insulted and it makes a mockery of and demeans the fine, meaningful and thought provoking words of those such as Res who have posted on this subject sad

Soapbox
A place to discuss anything and everything.

you read something and read a different meaning than was intended - we can't govern for that.
As has already been said in other threads, it will take a little time for these new forums to settle down, so how about giving it the benefit of the doubt for now?

wrote some good stuff

It is good to see someone putting over the whole story. Stating that there were so many faults during the day and years before. I am glad the post was not just a police bashing exercise but a look at all the authorities and the fans involved. All of them that aggravated the problem need to hang their head in shame.
On the other hand, some of the police can hold their head up high as their actions saved lives as well as the fans saved lives. Alternatively, some of the fans should hang their head in shame as well as the police and local authorities.

Britain ordered the release on Sunday of hundreds of secret documents relating to the 1989 Hillsborough football stadium crush which killed 96 people
perhaps some closure is coming ?

Without a doubt Dave, another one of the injustices about the disaster is the actions of many police and emergency services on that day, not to mention many of the people of Sheffield who opened their doors to the hurt, confused, wounded and afraid, who have been overlooked somewhat by the whitewash of misinformation that followed.
I don't know about the releasing of the official documents. To me this seems a half arsed gesture. Aimed at moving towards opening a new enquiry, but still falling well short of it. I don't think it will achieve anything but open up new avenues of hurt and anger for those most closely involved. It will increase calls for a new enquiry, but I think if the Government were going to do that, they would have done that long ago. This is simply a measure of calculated appeasement, timed for maximum publicity I hasten to add, rather than a genuine attempt at putting the record straight.
Out of that dreadful terrible day, a ray of good came out of it. That being that the things put into place after, will hopefully never allow anything like that to happen again.
All seated stadiums are now the norm at the biggest grounds, and any team that goes into the Premiership have to pass strict ground regulations now. How it should be.
I remember watching that day unfold on my tv. I have been involved in crushes at football matches many times, and believe me it is frightening.
It now seems that the records are going to be opened up ten years earlier, after the midweek rememberance service, so families can ask and find out things, that they would have had to wait even longer they did not come out at the time I do not know.
I hope that this can be " put to bed ", but think that nobody will ever admit to anything.
Somebody must have given the order to open those gates.
Luckily the ticket system put in place now is much stricter, and I can only hope to God I never have to witness anything like that again. A lot of those people were just kids.
Am glad that people continue to remember, and will continue to remember. An awful time and must be terrible for those who lost loved ones on that awful day.
Firstly, this comes from the person least likely to watch a football match, ever. It's not that I deplore the game per-se, just all the hype that surrounds it. No football player is "worth" 17.4 gazillion pounds, some bellybutton fluff and a crunchie bar- but that's another point entirely.
I grew up not a million miles away from Liverpool, in a very working class family. My background is close to that of many at that match. The events of that day bought me to tears then, and reading Res' post almost saw a repeat of them.
There are many people who should be ashamed of their behaviour that day. Not least the "reporters" involved. It's no wonder the people of Liverpool are still so steadfast in their boycotting of the Sun.
My only real "point" is this, and it's to anyone doubting that the authorities could be capable of covering up in this manner. Believe it. I would have doubted it once, but when you see it first hand from the inside it shakes your belief in everything that you thought was just in the world.
I hope those affected are close to some sort of closure.

couldnt agree more, and any realsing of documents will of course be the edited version.
