Is that really any different than today though Blue? Do the teachers at that school travel much further to work now?

To be totally honest I am not sure about that school, the primary school that our youngest boys go to has only a few teachers from the this town, the rest travel some miles, one in particular traveling over 30 miles.
They get around the problem by employing all the teaching assistants from the town, so they can take the classes

It has got so bad that some schools have banned playing conkers in case a child hurts themselves ffs.

This is where one story of one school and one man making one stupid decision has escalated.
In my mind the stupidity comes from those that exagerate the problem, like the papers and the politicians to further their own agendas.............then individuals who do not see through it, well they can decide if they are being gullible or not

Does that really make any difference?
The whole point is it was a HEADMASTER, a man who I would have thought had more common sense.
A headmaster who thought playing conkers was dangerous, and against HIS schools heath and safety policies.
The guy really should not be in the position he is in....a complete nut case.
I hope his other decisions he makes are not as cranky in his school.
Sorry but teachers living outside of the schools area is hog wash, and a pretty lame excuse.
I am sure that buses and trains were running, but as a teacher they know they will get paid for not attending school, so cannot be bothered with the aggro of getting to work, like a lot of other people managed to do in last years bad weather.
Mrs777's Daughters school texted parents at am, yes that early saying the school was not open. Funny how both myself and Mrrs777 managed to get into work on that day.
The school made a decision based purely and simply on safety grounds, certainly not on the premise of wondering IF any teachers would turn into work.

The point is that you, the papers and the politicians have run this story out about schools (note the "s" at the end of school).
This was one man who cocked up.........and suddenly it is exagerated. Now the papers exagerate because they sell papers, politicians exagerate because they point score. Whats your excuse?
This whole story has been exposed as a myth and it was not law, not OFSTED policy or indeed a council policy, yet it keeps getting rolled out every few months as an example of H&S gone mad.
I do not mind debating mad H&S but someone show me the laws that are mad.........not some prat who made a crap decision and using one person who is a nugget as a generic term to H&S being bollox.
Every example I have seen on this thread is people in public or private sector cocking up as they have not got the brain power to implement simple steps to ensure their employees and others are safe at work. Instead they revert to "banning" things instead of doing what they are paid for, doing the job safely.
Dave_Notts
He was still a Headmaster Davey.
A man who apparently holds a high position in society.
He may me a one off but his actions affected many others.
He like many others push the safety and health issues to ridiculous levels of madness.
He is not alone either in their mad thinking.

So a headmaster in charge of one school affects H&S law across the whole country Kenny? Do you really believe that? Honestly?
Dave_Notts
Of course not Davey but...one bad apple and all that.
If it had been Billy Bunter down Maccy Dees I could have understood it, but a Headmaster adopting this kind of madness?
Can you not see the connection?
I can see human error. This will never go away. There are idiots everywhere, but to blame the law for idiots being among us is stretching it a bit far.
If we look at this story of the conkers. He banned it at his school because he cocked up. Nobody else did. Everybody thought he was a prat and he was exposed through the media of being a prat. Nobody else tried to enforce this at their place of work or school or anywhere. His influence was limited to being in the paper and selling them as a filler.
For the life of me I cannot see any connection between a prat and the law being an ass.........that is stretching it too far. Unless you would like to explain this connection.

3) Don't put 2 off.....not sure what that one means.
Dave_Notts
Don't put off booking a dentist, you eejit..........now get to bed, or walk the landing, whichever helps the pain

Last Christmas we did a whole load of baking for the homeless shelters... one of them wouldn't accept our home baking because it hadn't been made in a kitchen with a health and safety certificate. rolleyes
The old people's home next door were uber grateful.
PC gone mental.
Snipe nosed is what you need..........that was what I used on a weekend when I couldn't get an emergency appointment. Nearly passed out with the pain.

Outside the southeast, where you live, there is a whole country you seem to know nothing about.
Up here we have one school which has a catchment area the size of the area encompassed by the M25. Some of the villages in that catchment area have bus services only some days of the week, and haven't seen a train since the 1950s. We have schoolkids up here who do seventy mile roundtrips by taxi and bus to get to school. One of our villages still had snow on the ground in March - and all you can do is whinge about how people won;t do what you want to make your life easier....
As for the seven ten am notice of school closure, guess what? If schools leave it too late they find themselves stuck with kids whose parents have already gone to work, so can't be sent home. Except the school can't guarantee it will have the people to look after them or feed them - so they have to make early decisions. perhaps if you voted for higerh council tax you might get a service that looks more like the one you want...

Where the fuc- do you live where people have not seen a train since the 1950's fgs?
I may well whinge as you so aptly put it and maybe living in the much more affluent South, I expect a decent service obviously you live somewhere where they still have tin baths and outside bogs! Still that's up t'North for ya....cobbled streets and all that chuck.

Poor excuse in your first paragraph......parents worked in the 60's and the 70's yet schools never shut through bad weather!
Higher council tax ffs??? I pay enough already for sub standard service by muppets at my local council. Obviously you are more than happy with yours, even with the tin baths and outside bogs. For me I expect schools to open and not use lame excuses to not bother to turn up for work.
BTW.........I hope I never visit your part of the world, probably still got trams. and steam engines.

There are trams in Croydon and Wimbledon. And they go out to Beckenham, which is in Kent.

Beckenham in Kent? lol Yes I suppose it is, but the tram STOPS at Beckenham and ventures no further into the Garden of England.....I wonder why.
Maybe I should have said empty mines instead of trams then?
Now let me guess Davey.....your from up t' North? Wait a tick, oh yes you are.
Now do not take exception old chap all because I slagged off the North.
Comparing the North to the South, is like comparing a lovely white wine, with a bottle of cheap plonk......hardly fair is it?
Mind from what I have seen of the North I would much rather stay down here.....reminds me of the Last of the Summer Wine....now what have I said about wine above?:grin:

I like the bit in the article where it says that Maggie reported Lord Young used to bring her solutions to problems where everyone else just brought her problems.
A breath of fresh air indeed! In an interview this morning, he mentioned that there is no legal definition of a "Health and Safety expert"; anyone can be one which is probably why there are the problems now. One other rather remarkable point he made was that, under present health and safety rules, a fireman dashing into a burning building to rescue the occupants can be prosecuted for putting his own life in danger
We still have steam trains here in Dorset, wonderful sight, we visit very often, kids love it and I enjoy taking photos. Had the pleasure of a day on the footplate recently. Sadly, thanks to Doctor Beeching the railway through our town has gone.

He has reported all the bunkum that has been de-bunked in the HSE myth of the month slot on their website.
He has not reported which pieces of legislation are not appropriate. All in all a waste of money for reporting nothing.
A health and safety expert is a person who is competant to undertake the role. Someone with the qualifications, training and experience. If they haven't got this then they are not an expert or even just capable of doing the job. If somebody employs somebody and do not check the person they are employing are competant.........then you have to wonder why they are in the job to employ somebody who is not competant in the first place.
Under Section 7 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 a person has "to take reasonable care for the health and safety of himself and of other persons who may be affected by his acts or omissions at work". It is an offence but I have never seen any case law on any fireman being prosecuted for doing a heroic deed........not unless he has seen one but then forgot to add it to his report.
