I think this could be step too far
All smoking in cars should be banned across the UK to protect people from second-hand smoke, doctors say.
The British Medical Association called for the extension of the current ban on smoking in public places after reviewing evidence of the dangers.
It highlighted research showing the levels of toxins in a car can be up to 23 times higher than in a smoky bar.
But a report by a cross-party group of MPs and peers said non-legislative options should be considered as well.
The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Smoking and Health even said calling for an immediate ban could be "counterproductive" as consensus needed to be built across society before taking such as step.

At the moment it is legal, so more and more restrictions look like smokers being hounded out of their habit. That is probably the case. Personally I think they should just bite the bullet and end the freedom to smoke altogether.
People used to beleive that smoking was good for you - like blood letting of sick people. We stopped blood-letting because people realised it a) didn't help and b) contributed to many many deaths. I really don't understand why people don't realise the same thing about smoking. dunno
firstly can I say, no one should be driving and smoking !! The highway code states that both hands should be on the steering wheel apart from changing gear. This is the same rule as why being on the phone is not allowed. If you have a lighted cigerette in between your fingers, and taking your hand off the wheel to take a drag, that is against the highway code !!
However I don't think it should be banned in a car, for passengers if all in the car are agreeable. However it should be banned in a car with children. They should not be subject to an adults smoke.

Do you think it would be police-able though?

Not 100% of the time, but you can probably observe a smoker at least as easily as soemone not wearing a seat-belt. And anyone driving slowly through traffic will be spotted with both a cigarette and a child with no problem at all.
TBH anyone who smokes in an enclosed environment with a child obviously couldn't give a damn about the child's health. Whether adults should retain the right to engage in harmful activities (many people ski and climb and they are also very dangerous) is up for discussion but absolutely no-one has the right to expose children to the sort of danger that smoke poses.

Possibly the same type who may tell the officer to feck off when stopped for such a crime
how about just making it illegal to smoke in a car if there is a person under the age of 16 in it?
smoking in a works car or van is illegal and obviusly enforceable to a point. so banning anyone from smoking with a child in the car would be no more difficult to police than say smoking in a works van would be. the penalties should be higher if smoking with children in the car if caught doing so.
smoking in a car should remain legal if no children are there as well. next they will try and ban you from smoking in your house, or even out on the street! is that a joke? no it is not as a while back nobody would have thought smoking would ever be banned in all public places, well except of course the houses of parlemant.
i do not smoke but i understand that they are pushing the boundaries for peeple that do smoke. there are far more important things that need looking at, rather than what peeple do in there cars.
this country has no money apparently and are laying off police numbers yet they continue to introduce new laws. are there actually enough police out there to catch peeple, as cameras wont.

I see lots of people smoking in works vans, has there been any cases of people being convicted of this crime?
I know smoking is bad for me, but I enjoy it.
I know smoking costs the National Health money.
I also know that excessive drinking and obesity is just as bad for you and costs the taxpayer even more not just to the National Health but in the case of excessive drinking, to our Police costs too.
I will accept a total smoking ban if you accept that excessive drinkers be charged and treated like criminals as some would have smokers treated, that obese people that are the way they are because of eating too much are made to diet and excercise by law and those with eating disorders are forced to have medical/mental help.
Seems fair to me
A slim, non drinking SMOKER lol

Blue,
and having got the media attention and the headlines, they were challenged on their figures and have since 'amended' them.
The British Medical Association has admitted that its claim that smoking in cars generates 23 times more toxins than you would find in a smoky bar is wrong.
BMA issued a statement: "Further studies demonstrate that the concentration of toxins in a smoke-filled vehicle could be up to 11 times greater than that of a smoky bar. We apologise for this error."
It exact minut of level of toxins are irrelevant really, driving and smoking IMO is nuts. Burning ash 3 inches from your face travelling at 70 mph shouldnt be allowed if we consider texting or using a mobile to be illegal.
As for a total ban, that a dangerous president, but getting rid of the nhs would be a step forward. That way anyone can do what they want to their own body, they have to take the responsibility for it. I see to many overweight, emphsemic. High blood pressure , high cholesterol, etc etc patient who brought it on themselves, then come to the nhs feeling its their god given right to destroy their body and expect the nhs to spend thousands on digging them out of the shit shout them having to make a single change to their lifestyles.

Yes stop the police and taxi drivers reaching for thier radio mikes and those ambulance drivers doing the same, stop people scrathing thier noses, force everyone to buy an automatic car like mine so they dont have to take thier hands off the wheel to change gear in fact ban all those fire engines and ambulances straight away as none of them are automatic transmissions
How is it different to change gear with one hand but not smoke ? smoking is relaxing for some changing gear is traumatic.
As for the NHS smokey bar v in car figures yes they got them totally wrong the % is much higher than they quoted as there are no longer any smokey bars smile unless you count the Houses of Parliament bars where MPs can still smoke indoors, has anyone done a study I wonder to see what effect having a driver who weighs 18 stone has on the steering of the average car when nobody is sitting in the passenger seat ? or the effects of an air bag deployment when the persons stomach is already pushing against the release point ? - ah sod it let's just join the EU rulers and ban everything
