As from 25 October 2010, if your youngest child is aged seven or over, or will be seven in the next year, your Income Support may stop during that year if you are only claiming it because you are a lone parent
I've now been a single parent for nearly 2 years. I have tired to find a part-time job to fit in with school hours and have come up with nothing. I've sent out well over 500 letters to various company, been to every employment agency where I live and basically if you want school hours all of the companies have come back with the same answer we dont do them or if we do staff already employed op to take then if they come available.
I've now taken to looking for a full time job but my biggest problem is one of my children is disabled and I just cant afford the extra child care if I did get a job as he need one to one care so any after school clubs/child minder it would have to be one to one care, which costs double the amount of an able bodied child. My other child is 10 and she said she would be ok gong home on her own after school as she said it would save me some money on child care, but I honestly dont want her going home on her own, she'd have to spend nearly 3 hours on her own and to me thats is totally unfair.
My disabled son only sleeps for 3-4 hours a night as well and at the present moment in time I'm tired all the time, and when I spoke to the "Job Centre" they said cant you catch up with sleep when hes at school. Yes I can, but if I'm having to work when am I going to get time to sleep.
So how does the government think I'll get a job?
Soul, if your son is disabled and needs one to one care, wouldn't you qualify for carers allowance?
I don't know was just wondering.
well considering that people could quite possibly be working till 66 now until they get a pension ,but i'm sure sure that could eventually rise to 68,its only fair that people who claim other benefits feel the tightening of the belt aswell...i think its only fair!
Oh I can claim careers allowance but then they stop it out of your income support, but when I'm forced to work I can get to keep the £35 a week which will pay one days child care for my disabled son.
I know there are people out there who do abuse the benefits system, but I honestly dont see how I will be fit to work. 3-4 hours sleep a night and the government do not take into account that I have a disabled child they just see me as another person on income support.
what about working tax credit and child tax credit .. as i understand it they pay for the child care on top of the allocated allowance. i have been lucky in who cares for my child as it was family and no need for added costs and i also had various jobs that did cater for my childcare needs, working in school hours is definitely a bonus and a lot of supermarkets do allow for mothers with children better working hours
I thought Mcdonalds bent over backwards for Mothers who have kids at school?
I do not know where you live but around my way they are always looking for workers....just a thought.
hi soul just a thought but our local council offers a service for parents of disabled children in that thay give you an allownace of per hour so that you can employ a person chosen by yourself to look after your child either in your own home or elsewhere, your resonsible for their tax n national insurance tho,
May be worth checking with your council to see if they can help.
just found it on the website......
Social services - direct payments
Service Description
A direct payment is a cash payment allowing clients to buy their own support instead of Social Services providing it. The money can be used to employ a personal assistant or to use an agency to provide staff for you. A client can 'mix and match' and have some support provided by Social Services and take some as a direct payment. Recent 'Self-directed care' schemes have involved managing adult social care in general on the basis of the individual choosing their care package based on a fixed budget.
sorry if you already know about this, n good luck withn the job hunt x
Yep been through all the tax credits etc but still doesnt cover the child care as they wont pay for the one to one care.
And my son doesnt qualify for any extra help from the council a hour to look after my son I'd do it for that shame I cant pay myself lol
Actually I did try McDonalds but there is a waiting list of people who want school hour jobs, same with local supermarkets as well. Its just a shame that all the years I works and get skills no company seems to want them part time. As most companies say part time staff are more trouble than they are worth.
Personal I find there is a big brick wall out there for people who have disabled children, I have been trying for 2 years just to get extra help respite care and younger cares help for my other child.
As an employer I also would not take on part time staff.
It is difficult enough out there to find work, and part time work is even harder to come by.
if you are single parent with 2 children one who is disabled, work 16 + hours and claim dla for your disabled child (which is a presumption based on thinking if there is a requirement for 1-2-1 child care you would be) you could benefit hugely from working.
the web site link above can give you a idea about what you are entitled to.

ps cant remember who said it , but yes i will not get to retire till im 67.
i am worse off working financially, its a bloody juggling act with children completely on my own but i dont see why i shouldnt work. i chose to have children.
ty fem I'll have a look at that website
gradually more and more benefits will be cut and the newspapers will cite the small minority of fiddlers to justify the cutting process. tory (modern conservatives) and labour (new labour) will vie with each other as to who can make the most efficient use (cuts) of public money (tax). hospitals, fire stations, ambulance stations, schools, libraries, parks dept and meals on wheels will close to reduce the psbr cos our fuckin tax has been earmarked to fill black holes caused by worthless derivitives in bank's balance sheets that banksters have stolen from us via their crony politicians who they own ! oh and i forgot, they will cut our pensions, raise the retirement age and raise taxes.....meanwhile, stories in the financial institutions owned press about benefits to illegal imigrants will abound, so some silly fuckers will blame them for all our ill's. its called "cant see the wood for the trees" wake up sheeple, kenty, you go back to sleep.
yes i agree, the benefit culture must be changed. lets cease unemployment benefit, sickness benefit etc and force the peasants back to work by the threat of impoverishment and starvation. lets keep the financial system going by supporting it from ever increasing taxation and maintain the benefit system only for banksters and their puppet politicians.
lets make things that there is no demand for worldwide, as aggregate demand worldwide is falling due to the lack of credit supply and make the most vunerable in society just work.
lets stop imigration altogether and send everyone back who came here from the romans onwards and if its too expensive to do so, lets herd them into work camps, well the fit and able anyway, (kill the rest) work them to death, shave their hair (lice) for pillow cases and use their burned bones for potash (fertiliser)= PROFIT i'm sure that gm (opel factory), seimens, a.e.g, krupps, bosch, v.w. and mercedes would be willing to help. in order to compete with the chinese, free labour would help.
of course, to carry out such a plan we would have to trick the peasants into believing it is in their own interests to go along with it. mmm i wonder....i know, lets tell them the reason for the ponzi scheme collapsing (interest on interest) is the fault of the scroungers amonst them and get them fighting amoungst each other!
Yes Soul your above comments are a prime example of what is wrong in this once great country of ours.
I have had a raging toothache all week culminating into a nasty infection. I visited my dentist ( NHS BTW ) and was seen for five minutes for them to give me a prescription, which they did. I got charged for that privilege and then had a to pay a further 15 quid for my two items at the chemist. That works out to and I have not even gone down the road of tooth extraction costs yet.
I pay over 300 quid EVERY month for my NHS contributions, yet it still costs me a bloody small fortune when I really need to use it. Yet there are thousands, no hundreds of thousands of Poles, yes let's say what you was thinking Poles, who get most for free. That also does not include every other Tom Dick and Abdul who comes here, contributes jack shit, and yet gets everything for free.
That is going to be curtailed under the Tories, and not a moment too soon. I am sick and tired of seeing hard working Brits being taken for mugs, to help to pay for those who just take take and bloody take again.....all for free.
As I said in another thread....I have an Asian South African working at my firm. He is living with a Polish woman and they have twin boys together. She has not done a days work over here and he WAS on a students visa, so also contributed nothing. Yes he is working now and paying tax, but he and his family have taken more out of the system in the four years they have been here, than my Father of 77 has in all his life.
It would not be so bad if that was an isolated case, we know it is the tip of a massive iceberg. This country is virtually bankrupt and is it any wonder.
It is not just the NHS but as you have said, the schools by LAW have to leave places open for foreign kids to go to our schools. Even though they speak no English, the school have to lay an interpretator on as well The costs of all this are mind boggling.
I do not give a stuff about others, I care about the hard working Brits, of ALL colours and denominations who have worked damned hard and pay their way, yet have the piss constantly taken out of them, by a Government who is obsessed with taking on millions of others into this country, when it is obvious to the majority that we just cannot sustain this kind of influx, and that is just the legal ones. How many illegals are here taking the piss out of our system.
Blair and Brown for whatever reasons, have destroyed many areas of greatness about this country, and also bankrupted it....a great legacy to leave behind. But they will still get their gilt edged pensions and everything else they con from us.
Immigration is the biggest issue for me at the next election and the influx has to be halted now.
The Influx of immigrants from India and the West Indies in the 60's was brilliant for this country. They were bloody hard working individuals, they still are today and have been of a massive benefit to the UK.
It is the new breed that show no allegiance to this country, other than to take whatever they can, and then when the time is right for them to return back home, as most of the Poles that I know intend to do, sooner rather than later.
The Socialist Labour Government have seriously shot themselves in the foot, not just over this but their general uncaring stubborn attitudes. It will be a long long time before they are in power again, if ever again in my lifetime. I live in hope.
Wandering through the website, and chatting to a young lady who works for the DfWP, your benefit will stop when your child reaches seven: True. But: You can make a new claim for benefit and you will then have the advice and assistance (sic) of a "trained" adviser to assist you in finding work/training/education which can be tailored to your circumstances.
You will be contacted at least 8 weeks before the cessation of benefit to enable you to plan ahead.
Meanwhile, have you tried the local council ?
They have a large team/s of trained advisers to help you on whatever you want.
And for the "put them out to work" pedants: look at the employment opportunities advertised. Even bar work is "experienced persons only"
Very few people "live" on benefits....the VAST majority barely survive on them, and not even that in many cases.
Those who DO live well, and draw benefits, are usually referred to as CROOKS. They usually consist of a complete family where both parents work and tell the "dole" people they are unemployed.....some even have different names and different addresses to enable multiple benefits to be drawn.
what about a OU course? that way you could do it at home in your own time?
they also offer funding for pc etc.
maybe a ta would be an option as you have experience of children and onw with a disability, then you would be working within school hours aswell?

I'm well aware of the impossibilities of getting any sense out of DfWP staff, even if you can see anyone.
I have just started a new job. The DfWP employed doctors who told me I was not ill....despite having a monthly prescription bill of and severely reduced lung capacity. Arguing with them is a waste of effort, and very depressing. So I got a job...despite my doctors advice that it was not too good an idea....but he doesn't have to pay the bills.
Not to worry, I'll survive.
I expect you will too, as long as you don't let the bastards grind you down....which is what they like to do.
As for the conservatives ending the benefits of recent immigrant labour....they can't. Any citizen of another EU country can come here. EU legislation...they are entitled to the same benefits as the residents of this country...as are we in other eu countries.....or maybe you haven't got you EHI card. The same way they are entitled to enter this country to seek work and to live here. As we are to move to other eu countries too. Subject to current rules for benefits, which apply to resident nationals as well. Other migrants would not be entitled to benefits anyway.
That may well be true JTS but....I wonder how many Brits go to Albania or Poland or Nigeria or Romania? A few may go there on holiday ( why who knows ) but yes Brits would be entitled to free whatever, buy I cannot see too many leaving these shores for some of those third world countries....can you?
Yes a lot come here to work, far too many from Poland some would say, and it HAS had a detrimental affect on the job market.
Employers will employ people for the least ammount of money possible, and in some cases Brits have priced themselves out of jobs, and immigrants have priced themselves in, as they can afford to be paid less.
In Poland for example women in general earn about £200 a MONTH.....over here they can earn four times as much. But that does not help Brits looking for work at a decent wage.
i must be very lucky with my dentist
hes NHS but on the occasions i have to see him due to an infection i get seen on the day i phone and for free, im usually given a prescription but because i have lots of other medication i have a pre payment card (costs £10 per month) so i dont have to pay for the prescription
the one thing that does annoy me there is that to see the hygienist i have to pay the private cost cus shes not NHS
Nigerians do not have any RIGHT to live here. They have to apply for work permits and visas.
Any citizen of any other EU country can come here to seek work or live. The same as any of us can go to other EU countries.
In fact, more people go FROM the UK to work in other countries (and live) than arrive here from abroad.
And since we no longer train the workforce we have resorted to poaching trained people from other countries.
Training, by the way, used to be carried-out by the employer.
The point about immigrant labour being paid less than resident labour is a fine example of the labour market at work.
Which, by the way (again), is also the way that an incoming conservative government will work...and do not forget...they are subject to EU law and cannot do most of what they say they will...not without leaving the EU.
That's the labour market at work.
Why pay someone when you can employ someone at ?
Why do you think many businesses are losing staff, and then waiting for some time to employ more, at less.
Loads of people now work at lower rates, and work overtime at normal rates.
When the Chinese people really start to spend their money of consumer goods, and less of these goods are sold to the UK, you will really see a reversal of fortune.....
I'm a temp so you can imagine my wage isn't that good. When I work weekends/evenings or any extra hours including a bank holiday, it is the same standard hourly rate and it never changes. To top it all off, no sick pay eiter.
I used to work school hours but have had to increase my hours, a) to top up a poor wage and b) because of the amount of pressure and work I am under, if I don't do it, someone else will.......
