Get a rescue cat, far better to give an unwanted cat/s a home for life.

Alright, having a dizzy blonde moment: if I get a rescue cat/kitten, then it will already have a name, yes? Is is daft of me to want to give it a name?

I've never met a cat that answered to a name, unless you count "Oi!!" ;-)

Just as well, as I forgot the names of my two cats twicebanghead - when they came as kittens - so they are on their third name and 'settled' into their new names after 4 years. - "Oi" also seems to work as well.
PS - Thanks for welcome
Have you considered that any visitors you might have could be allergic to cats dunno

I have selective cat allergy, nice cats that say hello and then fuck off dont seem to bother me, but pussies that constantly crave attention make my eyes water and my nose flow.
................i think I have just worked out why im swingle

I have just sat here crying with laughter whilst reading it and Sarah is just looking at me thinking "he's lost it!!"

Mal that was such a funny read thanks.
Back to the OP
We got two rescue cats a brother and sister 6 years ago after our first tom cat had to be put to sleep after 18 years.
All three have been so different, I have found toms use us as a hotel, they come in for food, sleep, shelter from the rain and then go back out again. The female loves being at home, loves affection, company. The toms however would have affection on their terms and if suddenly their tails start to flick we remove hand promptly.
I would love to come back as a Tom cat one day. lol

What are you thinking of getting? Kittens, I know, but any specific breed? Oriental cats are amazingly loving and talkative,

If you can get a talking cat then grab it with both hands - you'll never have to work again - and if its bi-lingual too! fekking hell you can name your own price !
cats are cats - not human so don't anthromorphise them - it's demeaning to both you and the animal and leads to a skewed and unrealisitic view of the society we live in
The cat who allowed me to be his friend sometimes made more sense than some of the people on here!!

Jeez... lighten up, you're sucking all the fun out of life. loon
I'll rephrase for the dull of us.
"Oriental cats won't leave you alone and meow lots"
Would I be a million miles off in assuming you're not cat people?
*Him*
Actually I'm having great fun putting all this bollox on the posts, (or isn't that the point?) but then again if we all had the same sense of humour the world would be a very dull place.
Making assumptions? isn't that an ASS of U and ME?
As for being cat people - well no, we're not cat people, but we are people people - shall we go down the reverse anthromorphising route? I'm assuming not!

I got a strange cat allergy.. Everytime time I go to a certain some ones house there cats make a bee line for me and I get a slap for threatening to cook them bolt
Cats are nasty they make you sneeze and don't see the joke when you play Jonny Wilkinson with them dogs are fun and always laugh when they bite your throat out

Waking you up at 6am DEMANDING to be fed.
Dragging in bits of dead mice / birds across the floors
Bringing in live mice and then chasing them around the house, till they hide under furniture, the cat then DEMANDS you get them out so the chase can continue.!!
But wouldn't be with out him.

Ok, as I fast descend into middle age (I gardened today... and enjoyed it! :shocksmile I find myself drawn to the idea of having a cat.
Now, I'm not saying all cat owners are middle aged, but rather the desire to look after something other than myself suggests a certain maturity that I have, previously, been lacking. wink
So, just thought I'd ask the amassed brains, minds or opinions of you lovely SH folk: what do I need to know about cat owning before I seriously think about taking the plunge?

Please, please, please get a cat from a rescue centre. There are quite a few good ones in the Bristol area. We rescue and re-home cats, but usually in our home! At the moment we have 5 - 3 used to be feral, one has 3 legs and one is so much fluff we're not entirely sure there's a cat in there! We love them all, and they all have very different personalities.
If you get a rescue older cat, the boys tend to be the cuddliest towards women, the girls are more drawn to men, but as with everything about cats, nothing is guaranteed. They will get used to any name you decide to give them, but will usually come to a distinctive noise. If you get a pair kittens, be wary of giving them "double" names like Salt and Pepper. If one dies before the other, it seems even sadder when you call a "Salt" and not a "Pepper".
If you're on benefits of any sort, you may be able to get vet treatment for free, or reduced, at a PDSA or RSPCA centre. Also, the Cat's Protection League will give free vouchers for neutering/spaying.
Above all, they're great company - sometimes loving, sometimes cuddly, sometimes zooming pointlessly, but always, they're daft little buggers who you just can't help loving.
