CCTV - Paid to watch it from home, but would you ?

A website which pays the public to monitor live commercial CCTV footage online is due to be launched in Devon.
Internet Eyes will pay up to £1,000 to subscribers who regularly report suspicious activity such as shoplifting.
The private company intends to stream live footage to subscribers' home computers from CCTV cameras installed in shops and other businesses.
"The subscribers will have access to four screens at the same time and if they see anything suspicious, they can press the 'alert' button. This then sends an instant text and picture message to the shop assistant or manager - who then makes the decision about what action to take."
He said people have no choice over what CCTV footage they are able to watch for the 20 minutes they have access to, and they would be banned from viewing footage in their local area.
Although the CCTV cameras are based in stores across the UK, the rewards are open to anyone from the European Union who is registered with the site.

I can't wait to see what the Information Commissioner thinks about this.
The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has allowed the company to launch its beta site after it agreed to a number of changes, including only allowing subscribers aged 18 and over to access the site.
The ICO also requested the company, which had planned to offer the service for free, make people pay or to use it so their details could be checked and to prevent any voyeurism and misuse of the system.
A spokesman for the watchdog said: "Our CCTV code of practice makes it clear that CCTV operators should use appropriately trained staff to monitor images. We have provided advice to Internet Eyes on its own data protection compliance. We will be checking to ensure it has followed this and investigate any complaints we receive."

So far from being paid to watch CCTV, you have to pay to watch CCTV in the hope that you might get a reward?
brilliant...

i'd like them to issue video cameras to be fitted to our cars and then we can send them footage of bad car drivers breaking the highway code. bad parking, bad overtaking, going through traffic lights on red etc etc, oh and if we fined everyone who's number plates are illegal,i'm sure we'ed be half way out of the huge debt the countries in.

And those who don't wear seatbelts.
As if we dont have enough cameras everywhere as it is! Big brother is already spying on our every move and now everyone else is happy to lend a hand too. And its not as though cameras have given us the Utopia that they promise.

So who would all these endless hours of peoples own footage of what they considered to be bad driving be sent to? Who would process it and filter out the nonesense or the stuff that could never be used? Who would pay for all this to be implimented? Im sure it would cost far more than it could ever hope to generate.
The problem with this is that it relies on the public policing driving which we're just not qualified to do. Even cameras dont tell the whole story.

It could be a new business (thus taking people off the dole), with sufficient training to determine whats deemed as unlawful driving offences,
With the amount of offenders it would be self financing,(making a profit.
Also the fines should take into consideration the cost it takes to bring these people to justice.
The instances i stated would be seen on a video camera as proof of the offence.

I hate to labour the point here but taking people off the dole and paying them with what? How much do you think it costs to train people to that level?
What you're talking about is creating a whole new scheme whereby ordinary dole people (who might prefer to work in their chosen trade but who obviously cant do that so must be put to work elsewhere) are trained as police AND magistrates to judge a stack of badly shot footage from moving vehicles (not trained on the offence as police car videos may be) and fine people accordingly.
And this footage itself is far from conclusive. As I've already said, cameras rarely show the full story of what happened. The amount of actual fines that would be upheld from this i beleive would be miniscule. Far less than would be needed to even get this sort of thing off the ground. And isnt't this what we have traffic police for in the first place?
Try taking a video camera to a junction, fliming for a while then taking your footage to the police when you have what you would deem a few good offences and see what they make of it.
Leave the armchair magistrates to judge what they're qualified to judge, Jeremy Kyle guests.

Not to mention the concern with a scheme whos funding depends entirely on conviction results. Isnt that called performance related pay? And then the hours of court time taken up with people challenging the fines and not paying.
