It is disgusting that these charities bombard our televisions begging us for money.
It is terrible that they stand in the street asking for money.
we just sent a fortune to bail out Greece and Ireland in the EU we plan to send more
we just sent £750 million to help the education system in Pakistan.
we send obscene amounts of money in foreign aid to countries everyday.
why should these wonderfull charities have to beg for money, why isn't Britain taking care of them before bailing out other countries who cannot manage thier own finances ?
why other than tax benefits are they charities anyway, shouldn't the government be paying to protect the animals of Britain, to finance the Countries finest Childrens hospital, to prevent the abuse of children in Britain, to assist soldiers and thier families suffering as a result of serving thier Country ?
Is it time we thought of our own people first ?
I understand that some countries need our help and that there is a need for foreign aid payments, that there are victims abroad that need our help, that winning hearts and minds can be a good policy but surely taking care of our own first and then seeing what's left in the pot is a sound way of thinking.
Couldn't agree more.
I don't 'do' charities personally. Charity for me begins at home.
The thought that a significant amount of money donated in the first place goes in 'administration', never seeing the light of day in helping the 'cause' pleaded for and thereafter to help keep the President of this week's favoured banana republic in the life style to which he has become accustomed - even funding his new aeroplane or weapons with which to fight British troops with sometime later - I find totally abhorrent.
Agree with you Jed.
But the news today has stuff about on-line petitions which, if the get over 100,000 signitures the Gov "must" debate them in Parliment. Bringing back hanging was one such petition. Now I have no great faith that these will actually atchieve anything, hey when did the wishes of the population count for anything?
But maybe it would be worth starting an on-line petetion on the Gov website about giving more to British charities instead of sending it abroad ??
John
sound idea but correct nothing will come of it, there are ways around most laws the government discuss.
Smoking ban - can you smoke in a bar YES if it is one of the bars located in the House of Commons or House of Lords.
Do you have to have a TV licence if you have a TV in your home, NO not if your a politician as you are exempt this law
Do you have to tax your private motor vehicle, NO not if your a politician as they are exempt this law as they "need" it for constituency work travel.
Is fox hunting illegal - NO not if you do it in a certain way.
Do political parties have to stick by thier pre-election Manifesto - ha ha yea right, Labour following the introduction of 10% VAT said they will abolish it as soon as they came to power and said the same about Poll Tax, re-nationalise public Companies and many other things introduced by the Tories, and vice versa when the Labour Party are in power and they promise to undo things labour have introduced.
The death penalty can never be right, DNA can only prove so much like that you were at a particular place or with a particular person it cannot prove exactly what happened, 1 mistaken sentance carried out makes us as bad as the perpetrators of crime, and why should some get off so easily, death can be better than imprisonment to some. Use the US system and give out realistic sentances, take a life should get a life sentence that means they never get out. Hard labour should be introduced, dont halve the sentance for being good, increase the sentance for being bad. 5 years should mean 5 years, forget about the cost of keeping them in prison, the cost of policing re-offenders is far higher, most crime is committed by re-offenders.
Charities can bug me but being in the EU bugs me more, it does nothing good for us and lots of bad.
If charities deserve help give it to them Mr Government dont give it someone else and if you do feel charitable Geordiecpl2001 - meet us ........ giggles

i agree that we should put our own first but in a lot of instances where our money does go there are brits in that country/situation.
what i do not agree with is giving that despot country pakistan any money at all. they are a corupt regime as we now know from where bin bag laden was and it is cleer to me that pakistan must have known he was there and shielding him from capture.
africa and the sad famine that is happening at the moment i agree with giving money to that but giving mindless amounts of money to europe for shite new laws or to places like pakistan is horrid and when there are plenty of our own citizens that need looking after I have to agree with your sentiments.
Aid is rarely given as charity, the reasons governments give aid is usually motivated by the returns we can get ..... In a global marketplace creating and protecting your markets is critical

I agree with what you say, but I will add that charities need to have professional staff, and the bigger they get, the more they need. You get little old dears volunteering to work in the shops, but you don't get volunteer marketing staff, payroll staff, admin, and all the other full-time professional dudes a company needs to run efficiently.
I have never really understood why a developed nation with taxation and investment strategies needs voluntary donations from the people to provide essential services.

Much depends on what you consider 'essential' that is not provided by the State.

Well, I can think of a few but it is for each individual to decide if these could be considered 'essential' in the current economic climate. RSPCA (when the PDSA do so much good work with animals) CAB (when Govt websites list all available consumer information, as well as Which? Christian Aid (when more there are possibly more Muslims than Christians in UK these days). I could go on, but maybe you get my point.
