Democracy: A corpse walking ?

“The worst thing in the world next to anarchy is government.” Henry Ward Beecher
Bloggers post what they claim to be the “scariest economic chart” or the ”chart of the century.” Indeed, many data sets are frightening, but none more so than the one to the left. Modern government has failed. These countries are insolvent and will default.
Jagadeesh Gokhale compiled these figures on European debt. This data shows incontrovertibly that all western democracies are on death row. The unlimited welfare state is the cause. Some governments are delusional, believing they can continue on their present paths. Others cling irrationally to hopes of some miraculous reprieve. All are dead men walking.
Government has always been inefficient and mostly ineffective. For most of history that was inconsequential, because governments had limited roles. Monarchies and various forms of authoritarianism had no reason to buy votes. That changed when participative government was instituted. The dangers of participative government devolving into democracy were well understood:
“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury. From that time on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” – Alexander Fraser Tytler, 18th century Historian and Jurist
“Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There is never a democracy that did not commit suicide.” – John Adams
In the 1880s Otto von Bismark instituted the first welfare state. Other governments followed with varying time lags. The Progressive Era in the US created the Federal Reserve and the Federal Income Tax, both in 1913. They provided powers never intended by the Constitution. In the late 1930s the US started a social security system, the last developed country to do so.
Once democracy was unleashed, citizens voted themselves benefits. Keynesian economics assisted politicians in their quest for votes. James Buchanan and Richard Wagner observed in Democracy in Deficit:
“With the completion of the Keynesian revolution, these time-tested principles of fiscal responsibility were consigned to the heap of superstitious nostrums that once stifled enlightened political-fiscal activism.”
The last barrier to fiscal irresponsibility was removed in 1971 with the introduction of universal fiat currency. In the last 50 years, the US has not had a true surplus. Keynes’ theory, which envisioned deficits in slow economies offset by surpluses otherwise, was co-opted by the political classes. In less than seventy-five years, all welfare states were insolvent. The graphic below depicts government debt to GDP ratios around the world

Well well, fancy that.
Plim lol
Would love to be able to contribute to this thread but its way over my head dunno
Holds hands up as well, I am waiting for neilin-notin-backin-movedin-movedout-donethehokeykokey-backin-leeds to explain it in simple English.
Until then I just look at it with a blank expression........and three times I have read it so far

I'm lead to believe - by those more versed in the internets- that the phrase is WTF

Bless you Dave. Unfortunately, you do me too much credit, cos I have no idea what it's on about? confused Is it a right-wing U.S. based blog that's trying to lay the blame for all our current economic woes at the door of the welfare state?
It does look like a complete load of shite though. I mean, I've got a map in my 'ouse, and the U.K.'s never that big, is it? :P
N x x x ;)
I'll reproduce the chart that is on the url on the first post, below.
I read through it several times (well, more than that).
The gist of the blog is that the welfare benefits are now out-of-hand.
Britain seems not too bad, until you look at the pension obligation as a percentage of GDP Poland looks really frightening....
I think it means that we have spent ourselves into trouble....oh well, belt-tightening time !

I think it means you're quoting stats from a US political campaign group who oppose the Welfare state and make extravagant claims to prove their point.
UK debt as a proportion of GDP is shown as 63%. However, one sixth of that is the cost of financial intervention, all of which should be recoverable over time. Therefore the real figure is around 53%. Don't ask me, ask the ONS.
Now, just imagine that 'call me Dave', commanding officer of the Eton Trifles, makes a slash and burn assault on the public sector over the next three years, using that level of debt as an excuse. He'll be perfectly placed to buy the election in the south of England by using the proceeds of selling off Lloyds TSB and the repayments of financial intervention for massive tax cuts to benefit 'his' voters. SO marginal seats in the south will be bought at the cost of poverty elsewhere. Nice one Dave.
Ahhhh...
But: The leader intends to obstruct the unions donation of money to labour and reduce the amount of parliamentary seats (I wonder which will suffer more...bet it's labour and lib/dem). He does not need to buy voters in the south/south-east, since the map is heavily blue down here anyway !
He will have five years to reduce labour to bankruptcy and gerrymander a 75+ seat majority.
Job done.
Plans still going well, consultations proceeding to hand the jobcentres to local employment companies...along with staff/pensions.
State pension relocation to private companies also being considered.
Forced relocation of council services to outside labour...
Possibles in the June attack on public dept....freezing of state benefits and pensions ("things are much worse than we thought" (call-me-Dave))....immediate rise in pension age to 66 for men and faster rise in pension age for women.
Working tax credit
Child tax credit
All good fun....
Anyway, the killer in the chart is that all of Europe is virtually bankrupt.
A lot of people in the money-go-round are saying that there just isn't enough money in the world to prop-up the euro.
If that goes down then nothing "call-me-Dave" or "call-me-what-you-want-I'm-in-number-10-Clegg" can do is going to help, other than the state paying everyone nothing.
All this talk about The Welfare State being 'The Enemy' is really tooo simplistic.
The REAL threat are the people telling the Population that its The Welfare State.
These people aren't the type living very tough lives but the extreme opposite & they use a tool called 'Fear' to make you worried not being able to sleep at night.
Then the Population begs them for a solution to the problem(s) which in the majority of times they have created either by accident or deliberately.
If the entire Capitalist Society did fall down would Oxygen halt or the Rain stop?
It would be tough but our ancestors had it tough fighting Monsters we now call Dinosaurs.
The issue ain't Democracy it has & always shall be The Money that sadly poisons
EVERY Government & Dictatorship in history.
Money is the perfect drug as without it a person has nothing but is seen as nothing by
the majority of others.
Democracy at times can create some rather silly Laws but the reason behind this are always lazy populations that think by voting every 4 or 5 Years, this solves problems?
In the UK how many people moan in Barbershops or Hairdressers about the state of the nation but then don't bother arranging a meeting with their Local MP.
Cause all we really want is to live our lives & not really care about others or the bigger picture. Until we get sucked into it.
I know a person that was livid that the BBC decided to show David Cameron's 10 Downing Street Speech Live instead of Eastenders. They even 'jokingly' made a comment about this on their Facebook Page.
Selfishness, Vanity, Greed, Hedonism & Ignorance will destroy us not Democracy or The Welfare State.
Life Together or Death Alone.
