Yes the Philipinnes, desperate for clean water, tented accommodation, food aid, medicine and so much more, so I am quite dumbfounded to hear on tonights Channel 4 news that Britain has pledged 6 million pounds of aid, to wit cars and computors are winging their way to the disaster area as we speak. Cars and Computors ?

in order to coordinate aid more than fresh water and food is needed!! transport and a decent network would help to distribute the aid far more efficiently wink
Well I am not that stupid, in fact having distributed aid many times in disaster on the continent of Africa, I have a little experience, what I found was that ourselves and aid agencies had their own computors and systems that they brought with them, and trucks water bowsers, dozers, mobile generators, field kitchens and other heavy plant equipment were far more useful than cars. Helicopters helped too but we won't even buy them for our own needs.
I'll admit defeat.
Ive briefly searched BC, CH4, ITV and SKY yet I can't find any reference to any cars or computers? It just keeps saying water, blankets, food, shelter etc as you would expect
Are you sure you don't mean those that are needed by the aid team themselves?

I'm with you Trev all i can find is a reference to organising logistic routes first on channel 4 dunno
I think perhaps it was an error on the news, quickly picked up and changed in later transimissions, it was said exactly as I quoted, I know this because I paused virgin and called Sasha to listen to it because I was totally flumaxed by the statement.
I imagine the newscaster had been thinking in the back of their minds of another topic they had been discussing or were going to discuss and it just "popped in", done it myself so many times.
The joys of Live transmissions, not the first error won't be the last if error it was and being mostly human I can forgive an error lol .
I have seen someone shouting this with outrage on Facebook and it seems that a racist organisation somewhat embellished the facts and got as many people as possible to re post and tweet their rubbish. Purpose... Just have a little go at foreigners and point out that the government is being wasteful with aid and preferring foreigners over our own problems.
Not saying that Mids has done this but It is ironic and sad that so many people want to believe it, that it was re posted and re tweeted tens of thousands of times. I mean... Why would anyone bother to check the facts if the story fitted their own prejudiced views?
Personally I don't think the amount we have sent/pledged/spent at this time to aid the people of the disaster is anywhere near enough.
We have funds held in accounts specifically for this purpose, our aid fund is there to give aid around the world when needed, it's use at this time will have no effect on the UK economy.
These "foreigners" need our help and should get it.
I also doubt that the report I heard on Channel 4 News was the result of FB or Twitter, I am still more inclined to believe it was an error by an individual or individuals at Channel 4.
I don't doubt that some would then use that error to their own needs and for racist gain.

First I have heard of it but probably something as simple as a stuck Autocue.
Well, what I heard was that there is talk from Government sources (the Minister, no less) that they will send cash to enable people to buy their own food...
Meanwhile, in the papers, one reads about the elderly in UK spending up to 12 hours on a hospital trolley in corridors waiting treatment.
Kinda puts things into perspective for me...

it doesn't matter how much is in the Kitty mids I'm afraid the likes of the Philippines do not have the mineral rich resources needed for a bigger donation.
ooooooh your so cynical and so right lol

That's the answer then, they are going to send cars so people can drive to the shops and computors so they can do online shopping lol

£10 million seems to be in line with the likes of Japan and Australia and a little less than the USA. How much are other European countries donating?
I did read yesterday that China had donated a whopping £125K!

that's risen to 200k now but only in exchange for factories at a later date lol
we are always pretty top to the tree with donations max which is good for natural disasters
but bigger questions need to be asked like why are people starving and living in slums when billions are being spent on missions to mars and scotch whiskey.

Personally I support the giving of aid ........ to a point.
Tsunammi, Earthquake, Typhoon, Volcano all natural disasters and often impossible to avoid, usually the poorer people are hit worst because when a disaster hits a city you generally find that these cities are surrounded by slums, people live in the slums because they are attracted to the cities seeking work and a better life than they have in less populated areas, the slums were never designated to be living areas, they aren't wanted as living areas and nothing is done to protect the people in them or to make living conditions better for them.
Ok so that's one area I believe in sending aid, to help those victims of natural disasters.
But I cannot help wonder about other forms of aid that we send, if we are going to bribe countries or "purchase" rights to build, explore, own things in that country why do we have to call it aid ? who is accountable for such "aid".
For example why did we give Pakistan £10million in "aid" for their education projects when we cannot finance our own education system, did we get something in return ?
For as long as I can remember, certainly 50 years, we have poured aid into Africa, because people were drinking polluted water, because they could not grow crops due to drought, because of famine, the aid ads tell us that now we can build clean wells, teach them to grow crops, give them the tools to help themselves, so why after 50 years are they still dying in their thousands, is the scheme working at all ? is pouring in aid the answer or have 50 years and more shown us we need to be doing something else ?
We send money to stop poaching in Africa and the results are evident, poaching is down, poachers are being caught, animals are safer (but not 100% safe) why is that working but not the policies to stop drought, famine and dirty water ?
I don't know the answer but would be interested in opinions of others lol
