Today I closed my facebook account.
I have for a long time been disappointed that what was supposed to be a "social networking site" for individuals was being taken over more and more as another business advertising medium but the final straw was Facebook today announcing that they are going to aloud people to post videos of extremists beheading those they consider to be enemies.
It is one thing to allow freedom of speech but there are simple boundaries which can be observed, do we need to see the actual beheading taking place, those doing the beheading glorifying what they have done, cheering and laughing at their own actions ?
Surely some things can be left to the imagination and not published on a social network site where children have easy access ?
Will Facebook listen to world politicians and change their rules, not unless there is a mass exodus by the members.
Strange how Politicians in the West complain about the Chinese censoring Google etc. Yet today David Cameron wants Facebook to censor videos !!
But to be honest, we DO need censorship ! Problem is, who decides what to censor ? That's always been the problem ! Maybe when the Chinese are fed up with just buying our power and water industries they might buy some of our Media outlets and introduce their values to the editorial staff !
We rightly do not allow Child Porn, (and I think more could be done to stop it). And to my mind Facebook allowing beheading videos is just wrong. But Facebook say its OK as long as it is condemned by the poster / viewers, so what next ? Badger-baiting, as long the poster / viewer watches it then complain about it ?

So if you believe that Facebook is wrong, what's the problem with Cameron believing the same?
The worrying thing is that you can't upload an image of a woman topless but you can upload a video of the same woman being beheaded...
This proves beyond doubt that Facebook has American principles.
From what I understand the vidoes of beheading where on facebook for a time before being flagged by so many people that FB decided to pull the videos. Since then the decision was made to reintroduce allowing the video as it was a legitimate subject for debate. FB stated that the videos where not promoting or glorifying violence just informing people about them. If they had been seen to be promoting or glorifying violence then they would of stayed banned.
I can see the validity in the arguement as wasn't it FB that had a big hand in the changing of the old order in Egypt. Whether that order is good or bad in the long term is another discussion but at the time FB was applauded and there were quite a few videos showing unpleasant things happening there. Maybe these types of videos do allow people to be more aware of issues if they wish.
As for the showing of naked breasts etc, That's under discussion by Fb at the moment. I can see the point in not allowing porn but then a woman breastfeeding wouldn't be porn yet its still banned. Be interesting to see the developments.

FB so moral yet they allow prostitutes and escorts to advertise their wares on the site :small-print:
i am not on facebook or twitter.
my life is private and i do not wish to tell the world what im up to.
years ago someone would have said 'mind your own fucking business' or slapped you one for being a nosy bugger.
and to be honest most people who use such media paint a false image of themselves.

In my experience, most of the people on Facebook paint an amazingly ACCURATE portrait of themselves!
Yes most on there are very naïve about who can learn what from their profile.
When I had my FB account I used a similar but false DoB and a false place of birth, I also used my nickname not my given name, it is amazing what you can obtain with a DoB, Place of Birth and name.
I was never one for "friend collecting" or Poke collecting either and only had people on my friends list who I have met in person, I did not subscribe to those "information gleaning" free games etc.
Just like our profile on here really, our friends list here contains only people we have met in person.
I have never used Facebook as it seems to cause so much trouble if you don't add someone or de-friend them or whatever you call it, and as for Twitter who wants to tell the world that you are having a cuppa or you`ve just had your breakfast, get a grip people
