There is a report out that suggests the same virus that has been blamed for causing cervical cancer, has also been linked to a higher than average risk of oropharyngeal (affecting throat, tonsils and the back of the mouth) cancer. It is thought to be more of a risk than either smoking or alcohol.
72% of newly diagnosed throat cancer sufferers in one survey were found to have evidence of prior HPV infection.
It is estimated that oral infection with the HPV virus may increase the risk of developing throat cancer by around 32 times.
While oral sex is thought to be the main mode of transmission, kissing cannot be ruled out.
It is to be stressed, however, that this form of mouth cancer is extremely rare. The study focussed on a small group and more research is needed.
It isn't known whether the current vaccine being used to protect against genital warts and cervical cancer, will also protect against oral HPV.
