Jail/Capital Punishment what other alternatives are there?

With the on going horrors that keep coming out about Peter Tobin and his vile acts of murder, the topic of capital punishment (or the death penalty in its more brutal name) keeps arising.
Clearly as the UK stands with its what i class as far to soft criminal punishment system the death penalty will never come back (its all about human rights!!)It is however clear that in many cases getting sent to prison to live a life of luxury on the tax payers money is just easy time and an insult to victims and their famillies alike.
So what i am asking is what other alternatives could be brought into the picture that may act as more of a detterent and be seen as proper punishment for either taking a life or or any other of the more vile acts.
My idea would be to have american style HARD labour on large secure farms where food and crops could be grown to feed the UK thus giving us more food resources in these times of dwindling home grown supplies, all the old inner city industrial sites that are just sat empty could i am sure be put to this sort of use and changed into growing areas, cleaning up areas in poor state and providing a nation with supplies, and making the prisoner have to work 12 hour days 6 days a week and giving something back to the country is surely better punishment than sitting in a cell playing x box or watching dvd`s????
Your thoughts please.....................................
Partial frontal lobotomies and of course castration for sex offenders. Personally, I'd take away all comforts from prisons - remove all tv's, radios, books, newspapers, carpet, soft toilet paper - tasty food to be replaced with basic nutritional items, only water to drink, visitors strictly limited. I don't beleive confinement in itself to be an adequate punishment - many people these days are "shut-ins" because there is so much entertainment in homes, and many social services willing to provide it for free. Take it away from those that don't deserve it. Also, play the Sound of Music soundtrack on a continuous loop and issue ear-plugs to the warders.
Creatures like Tobin are not human beings and shouldn't be treated as such.
While it is no secret that my preferred method of dealing with serious criminals, murderers etc is a noose at the end of a long drop, I think that might well be a little too kind where some "people" are concerned.
Take for instance the reptile who helped torture Baby Peter and was later convicted of a baby. Hanging him would be over in seconds and in my mind an unsatisfactory end to the life of the absolute lowest.
So how about we quit experimenting on poor innocent animals in laboratories and literally use those scumbags as lab rats? A public information film could be produced showing how long it takes to choke yourself to death on tobacco smoke, if you breath it constantly. Choke the evil vermin to death and put a few kids off smoking, everyone's a winner.
I have read a paper where smoking is to be banned in prisons.......if they can get that in then watch the riots

All criminals wether convicted or not should be slowly tortured to death by trained teams of feral youths who in turn should be tortured to death by ............you get the idea

I do indeed and have to disagree. Because when everyone else is dead I'd get bored on my own in the world.

If they do it just means we'll have to put up with them for longer.
Perhaps we should bring back a form of National Service. A strong program of control, perhaps then we will reduce the number of offenders.
Then those that do can be removed from civil society.

For more information on how Britain CAN reduce it's Prison, please watch the following:

Simple but why don't they do it?

1. Is a Prison in Japan.
It looks cleaner than some Public Buildings I've been to in Britain.
Also, NO Sony Playstation 3 are allowed in Japanese Prisons.
A person can receive a Life Sentence without Parole if found having possession of
certain Illegal Drugs whilst being a Prisoner.
How can it be easier to buy Drugs in British Prisons than British Streets?
2. Chain Gang - America.
If this happened in Britain, I would say that crime especially the ASBO variety
would dramatically decrease. Due to where I live I unfortunately know people (not friends) who have regular issues around Anti-Social Behaviour.
The connection is that they are all lazy. Forcing them to work hard doing Manual Labour in Public would be their idea of Hell.
It's impossible to look cool on the street, sweating wearing a Pink T-Shirt with a Guard that has a Pump Action Shotgun overseeing the quality of you work.
So, make it happen & see a decrease in the rate of ASBO's.
3. Peace Corps - America.
I agree that Young People need 'a rights of passage' but am not down with the Military approach. For the record, I have two friends fighting in Afghanistan but I've seen how they & particularly the horrible manner other Men from my City have been treated AFTER leaving the British Military... not nice.
No, support nothing from their former employers, so Military National Service... no way.
Instead, have a National Service based on helping your Community both Home & Abroad.
Make it compulsory between the ages of 18yrs - 21yrs old.
Part of the problem is after Compulsory Education people no longer mix, they stay in their set. High Achievers don't really have relationships with people whom are at the polar opposite.
This is why Social Mobility is rubbish in Britain, our lives are more or less determined at age 16..!! Having this Peace Corps, would make different people know each other & understand society by gaining pride along with respect.
4. Say's it all.
This is the biggest puzzle yet to be solved by ANY British Government.
Why do people take Drugs... what makes a person stick a needle in their Arm?
Is it the person, society, lack of support, class distinction, racism, geographic part of the nation where that person is from etc etc etc....
5. Simple.
6. Norwegian Compulsory Education System.
If you knew about how the Norwegians run their Compulsory Education System, you would become very angry & upset at British Politicians along with senior figures in British Education.
How can a nation such as Norway that has less G.D.P than Britain have a better model of Education.
After watching the Newsnight Short Documentaries, it makes a person want to rush to the nearest Airport & leave...

ok,feel the real need to be shouted at and patronised for some reason.
What we need is a socity that protects the weak and helpless, that considers what went so wrong that people can end up without moral boundaries and looks itself squarely in the face and says, how did we create this world?
to kill or incarcate pp for life is to pass on by saying,i have no part in this, when we all by our choices everyday are responsible for the world we live in
The child you pass and say nothing as his mother wacks his head...the majority of psycopaths have brain damage caused by early physical trauma.
the girl crying on the street...who goes on to have a child she hates as a product of abuse
how many times are we all guilty of passing by,saying not my problem?

Well said

Intervene at your peril, and end up with a knife in your back, bullet in the brain, or maybe just bleach over your head....
Shorter (costs less and you've got room for more inmates inside rather than out and about) but MUCH harsher sentences are the answer. The problem with the death penalty is you cannot compensate someone if they get it wrong, and sadly sometimes they do.
Plim
All I want to see is a proper sentence for a serious crime.
IF someone gets 6 years then serve bloody 6 years..all this good behavour rubbish and then freed after 3 years.
6 years should mean just that but...if you do something bad in prison then you get time ADDED on to that sentence.

And how many unreported cases prevent abuse or violence or any number of other petty acts of day to day criminality ???
Some people don't deserve to live: Baby P's killers etc. But they are a tiny minority. So I'm thinking about the rest of the prison population.
I would love to see prisoners worked so hard they are grateful to get out. Here is a proposed prison regime.
Trustee prisoners get to shower daily prior to working in the kitchens preparing breakfast.
- The rest up and out for wash/toilet, floor by floor. Showers weekly, staggered.
- Breakfast. Something cheap and sustaining. (dare I suggest porrige? LOL).
Back to cells to prepare for the morning tasks.
Half the population go into the classrooms and are taught (not just sit there and day dream - TAUGHT). Some learn to read and write, others study practical skills or more academic studies. But they are worked HARD with high expectations.
The other half go out and work. Some in ditch digging - especially those under punishment. Others ranging from highly productive farms, building works or manufacturing. (There is a smokerie in a prison in Scotland for instance.)
Lunch - 30 minutes max. Something simple and sustaining. Provided by the catering trustees. Hot pack-up for off-site work.
Afternoon carry on study/work or swap (not sure what would work best)
Tea - satisfying and filling (makes 'em sleepy biggrin)
Saturady is a half-day. Sunday is for visits, personal projects or crashing out.
Association - team games encouraged, or even just draughts etc. Main point is - interacting in a civilised manner or letting off steam in active sports at the weekend. Body building is not done as it is pointless and increases agression wuthout offering an outlet.
Evening - personal study. EVERYONE studies for something. Even if it's just a school cert in writing their name.
Bed, prompt
lights out.
No drugs possible to come in. Prevented by sniffer dogs, proper searches and anyone caught with drugs gets mandatory shit-to-hell work - inlcuding staff. Who are thrown to the general population if caught smuggling drugs in.
Drug addicts get effective treatment not just cold turkey.
Visitiation rights are limited - no physical contact for instance - until prisoners EARN contact rights.
With any luck they will be too knackered to start fights and will leave with a sense of acheivment in learning a trade/to read and earning their privilages.
Everything except basic clothes, food and work are earned. And are taken away for breaches of personal discipline. They are made keenly aware that they are the people responsible for what happens to them.
Maybe it would be the first time they had actually got something by earning it instead of being handed it (benefits) or taking it (theft).
It will take strong, trained and intelligent handling by staff - not just babysitting. I'm not putting prison officers down here - they have bugger all resources/time to do much more than babysit in too many prisons.
Foxy.....that is so out of touch with the prison service.
How right wing of you. lol
In most prisons it is soooo cushy, a lot cannot wait to go back in.
