Hate football, indifferent to it, even some that like it one thing is common.
Footballers get paid too much is the cry.
But do they.
The boss of the RBS is about to get a nice little earner for leaving, film stars earn a fortune and yes some footballers earn millions, many don't.
But why ......
Could it be because the bigger salaries you offer the more chance you have of getting the worlds best at your club, and having the worlds best gives you a better chance to win silver. (funny how winning silver is what the players and supporters want but the owners are seeking gold lol )
So you spend a small fortune you finnish in the top 5 you earn a packet in europe and you earn a large fortune in other revenue, sales of shirts n stuff around the world are phonominal for clubs like United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle, (yes surprisingly with some these are the top 4 clubs for selling abroad like China, Korea, Afric, India)
Have a look at some of what United will earn this season before anyone goes through the Turnstile or buys a shirt or a scarf, before a player kicks a ball or Sky pay them for television rights, before a someone pays them a Million quid to have an ad on the rotating board around the ground or 3 million to have an advert on a program.
A record shirt sponsorship deal of £53 million with Chevrolet, £180 million partnership with Aon for the naming rights of the club’s Carrington training ground, An expected kit deal with NIKE expected to be signed in the next six months is going to be worth a staggering £600 million, around 1000 million in deals like that is why clubs will pay high salaries just the same as someone making Die Hard 85 will pay whatever Bruce Willis asks them to pay.
Now put yourself in the players position, you have on average a 10 year career opportunity if your lucky, for 4-6 years of that career you can command an imense salary IF your one of the TOP 100 players in the world, top 100 in your profession that is some achievement. if your lucky you can play a bit longer but wont get the same salary, perhaps you can move on to coaching or management but there are no guarantees for that, invest wisely and you will be ok for life but to do that you have to have the investment capital in the first place even the best can have career curtailed by injury or salaries seriously dented by prolonged injury and not playing in a season.
Your Christiano Ronaldo, (Yes there is a high possibility he will leave Real Madrid this Summer and United are one of the teams that are looking to get him) you know that your skill was a serious factor in making United what they are and assisting them in commanding such high revenues away from the pitch and high profit on the pitch, you know you made them a massive profit of around £30-40 million in the transfer market when they sold you, don't you want a cut of those profits ? are you human ?
Yes some footballers recieve salaries that can be seen as imoral or grotesque and you could call it greed, but is it all down to just a footballers greed or is it also the shareholders of Sky, AON, Chevrolet, the Glazer bros, the fans that want glory and know that having the best team they can afford is the way to get it ? or is it simply business ?

You obviously have far too much time on your hands to craft a well written note about something you "hate"
Have put my opinion on football forward before, don't have time for it, but as your post it is all down to business decisions. Getting the right "stars" in generates the PR to generate the bucks from the punters and if you are very lucky generates the results on the pitch, although from past results its very difficult to buy a winning team.

Well yes, that's it in a nutshell, people may be passionate about football but it is a business and a very successfull one for some companies, it has some unique factors, not many people buy a company because they love what the company produce so they can watch the product but no doubt some of the billionaire owners do exactly that, some do it as a status symbol, very few actually expect a great profit from it because actually making it pay is, with the vast sums spent still a huge gamble, the glazers will make a profit eventually if they keep doing what they are doing and their latest transfer purse suggests that they will.
Most of those that do make big profits in football are actually other companies like Chevrolet and AON, Sky and the like, individuals like some of the players and managers, bookmakers and shirt manufacturers, piemakers and beer companies.
Oh and I don't hate footballers wages I don't think they are too high, I think that they may be imoral as are many salaries in this world but as a realist I think they are justified lol

I think it is less that footballers are paid too much, but that other sports (and lower levels of football) are not given a reasonable level of financial support. We are a country of sports lovers and participants. For such a small country we could produce a far better set of sports people of all sports and levels had a fair crack of the whip.

I was going to write some kind of response, but the original comment by the op has left me feeling I cannot be bothered, as I drank two coffees and ate a chocolate cake just reading it.

I don't really mind players wages.....thou lets face it not all deserve what they get. I would for example look at a certain Mr Torres who, for whatever reason, has not produced the goods he gets paid for !!! Maybe more players should be on a higher incentive scheme, rather than just straight salary. They might indeed try a bit harder then !!!
However the one gripe I do have is with the cost of watching a game. In some grounds now it is in excess of £50/£60. I do think there should be a ceiling placed of the cost of admission, and so if clubs make money from other revenue then fine, spend it as they wish, but they should not be allowed to continually increase the admission costs. Football used to be the working mans game, but it is fast becoming the plaything of the rich. I just fear for some clubs. When their rich benefactors have had enough and decide to play elsewhere, they are going to leave a massive financial mess behind.

I don't really know what to think on the entry cost thing, the average cost of a football match is very similar to entry to other entertainment venues, even swinging clubs charge that, but of course the big difference is that when it comes to taking the family to a match the cost is horrendous.
Of course it would be nice if some clubs subsidised entrance fees because unlike many venues they can get big income elsewhere, clubs like United could afford to do it but many clubs are struggling so it would be difficult for them, the harsh fact is that they probably at a corporate level don't care, most will get the same sized crowd no matter what the gate entry and that will give them the atmosphere they need but the real revenue just isn't coming from the turnstiles anymore it is sponsorship deals, broadcasting rights, advertising, shirt sales and the like.
A lot of entertainment venues adopt a "reduced entry" fee to get people in the door knowing they will make more inside if they have the numbers, one of our local swingers clubs reduces door prices quite often knowing that if they get the numbers they will make good bar profits whilst the other one operates a "bring your own alcohol" policy so cannot reduce entry prices often but does tend to offer a cheaper night out overall.
Not just the entertainment business either, the supermarket trend is less reduced prices these days and more "Buy one get one free/reduced" or "two for a reduced price" encouraging people to buy more than they normally would of certain items, they have always had loss leaders like Asda's famous beans for 7p knowing that the can they come in was costing 8p empty but once in for the cheap beans people bought more higher profit goods. I recall at that time I was buying halogen lightbulbs at 3 for at the cash n carry whilst Asda sold 1 for , you don't have to sell many more items at those profit margins to compensate for the loss leaders.
Perhaps a start would be low price family tickets to help the supporters like Alton Towers and other entertainment venues do.
But isnt it next season that a new Total wage cap comes into force whereby a club can only pay a certain % of it's worth or revenue into the salary kitty ?

On the contrary I love football and I personally don't think footballers are paid too much pro rata with other people at the top of their profession and also understand the business logic behind the high salaries, true I would like to see a cap on salaries but not just for footballers for a lot of high earners such as CEO's who fail at their respective companies but a lot of what these people get is bonuses not salary and in the real world we will never be able to tie up all the loopholes.
