Do you think, about time some one tackled the terrible waist, or is it mad for a council to be waisting money like this in our current financial climate
Sainsbury's taken to court over 'excessive' packaging of beef joint In landmark case, Lincolnshire council claims supermarket's plastic wrapping is damaging to the environment
I would think this council should look at it's own waste BEFORE it starts critisising others.
Kettle and Black spring to mind here.
All the waste that councils do and they have the cheek to issue court proceedings like this.
My question is simple....who is going to fund this court case? Oh I know the council tax payer....right got it.
This council will soon be bleating about having to cut services as they have no money, obviously enough to take Sainsburys to court.
Still Sainsburys lawyers will no doubt not be like the little man, they are a powerful and rich organisation....I await the outcome.

i bet the barristers are lining up for this little adventure now where is the cash cow emoticons wink
It all seems so pathetic Rob....but then again I have come to expect pathetic from councils....I am not usually disappointed.

The more terrible waists that are tackled the better in our opinion.
I would have thought that IF people were that concerned about waste, then outlaw ALL plastic carrier bags from being available in shops and supermarkets.
You can buy reliable strong bags that you can use time and time again for 20p.
We brought about 6 and have not had a single plastic bag since.....we used to have about nine or ten when we went shopping and that was on a weekly basis.
I still see people just like yesterday putting all their shopping into plastic bags.
They are the first step I believe in cutting back waste in supermarkets, not going to court over excessive packaging on a joint of meat.
I used to have a terrible waist until I went on a diet...
bolt
but seriously, I agree with kenty. There is no need to take Sainsbury to court on this issue; a swift kick in the proverbials with a heavy suggestion about an impending cleanliness control visit would surely do the trick! I don't know the political mix of Lincs CC but if they are heavily leaning to the left that may be an influencing factor in the reason to pursue this case but once again, it is the tax payer who will have to foot the bill.
Let's hope for the sake of Lincs folk that common sense rules the day.
On another note, in France plastic bags have been withdrawn from supermarkets now for about 4 years. There has been no detriment to the "shopping experience" that we have detected. It just requires the will to do it and to get on with it. Initial bad responses from customers in France about the lack of bags were met with the customary Gaelic shrug and a a modest addition to the bill for a lifetime recyclable durable alternative such as jute.

And the council is already looking at whether or not it will actually proceed with the case, according to the article.

You could have googled the political balance of Lincolnshire CC. 60 Tories out of 77 councillors. Not much chance of commonsense there.
Bloody Google eh? wink

It is legislation that puts a duty on a council to enforce. If there is anything pathetic then the actual legislation needs to be addressed and that is the government to change. If this government does not repeal it then they deserve the insult not the councils that have a legal duty to do something about it.

All the French supermarkets we use, in and near Cap D'agde, still give out disposable carrier bags.

Possibly in an effort to help maintain public decency by allowing people with no clothes to cover up
There's a wider game being played here. The council is aiming to spark a debate about the amount of packaging being used by the big supermarkets. This case is being used to illustrate the point. The aim is to put pressure on the supermarkets to reduce the amount of packaging they use, which is better for the environment and therefore better for everyone. A little bit of bad publicity like this can go a long way in making them change their policies.

One Yorkshire or two anyone?

maybe the council should state what they want more clearly or enlist the services of mp`s then
if that is the case then the council is playing infant games in a grown up world
and will simply dismissed as idiots by anyone who takes these matters seriously not least of all the big supermarkets
I was trying to find a jobs worth hat Rob, like they used to have on that's life.
Cannot seem to find one for this over zealous council.
I would have thought there were many many many more important issues happening in their area, then they could spend their time much more constructively, and much more to the benefit of the people that pay their wages.....the tax payers..
Here you go Kenty, best I could do:
you cant find it because its been replaced by this

The legilation states it very clearly. The MPs were enlisted as it was put through as legislation and passed. So this is the wishes of the MPs and government.
The council is the tool of the MPs/Government to enforce the legislation. If they did not want it then they will repeal it. It is not a Councils place to decide what laws they enforce, it is the job of Government. So if anybody is being made to look the fool it is the government.
It wasn't long ago that people were moaning of their bins and how full they are. This is one bit of legislation that was introduced to combat it. Whether you are for or against the legislation depends on how the indiviual feels about waste/recycling/saving money

The only people who can decide that is the courts. Anyone can accuse anybody of anything but unless it has been decided in court then it only remains an accusation.
Sometimes a company like Sainsbury pay for a trial on a subject so a precedant will be set, so everyone knows what the law requires. Is that happening in this situation? I have no idea dunno
