A BT competition seeks out UK's next fibre hotspots. Communities that are keen to obtain fibre-based broadband are being asked to publicly declare their desire for high-speed net access.
BT will log responses to a website to get a better idea of the potential demand for fibre-based services. The telecoms firm said the results would influence its future plans on where it deploys the technology.
It said this could mean that commercially viable exchanges would be the first to get the fibre-based service or that exchanges thought to be non-viable would be added to its deployment plans.
The survey, dubbed The Race to Infinity, will start early this month and run until the end of the year. BT has set up a website through which individuals and communities can express their desire to have their area fibred up. The site will host a leader board showing which exchanges are gathering the most votes.
The current top 5 (see ) being
1, Reading South
2, Cambridge North
3, Edinburgh
4, Glasgow
5, Merseyside West
Great idea in theory but typical of BT to have a bandwidth hungry site - it took ages for it to load on my 512 Kbps narrowband connection.
We're already getting ours. Our local exchange is being up-fibred in the next 12 months or so. :bounce:
But we are lucky - most people get at least an adequate (for non-business people) connection - many areas have got nothing worth having through the land-lines - driving people to much more expensive mobile-based broadband.
Virgin TV might be a bid shoody on quality but my 10meg BB is fookin ace compared to the 2mb BT shite i've been using at a clients house.
Even better, i think i'm getting a free upgrade to 20mb soon :bounce:
All
whilst there are several others available, we've usually found trying the speed test a useful excercised every now and again.
amazing how things vary at different times of day
As for moving to mobile 3g sessions, have a look at
or have a look at their latest issue re the 2010 Readers Awards Results in connection with Mobile Broadband, some quite revealing results
Bt..coming week today to give me fibre optic...or whatever it is.....should double my speeds..and no extra cost or installation cost.....so all is good says me !!
Our BT exchange already has fibre optic and by the end of december the main box in the village will have a fibre link to the exchange. now, 2.4 on a good day will increase to 38mb in january.
About time, yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Whatever you do dont go "TALK TALK"
