I'm not too well up on politics as I think that politicians are all the same and feed us with so many empty promises.
I am sat watching the lunchtime news and there was a report that Barack Obama has been awarded with the nobel peace prize. This news was followed by gasps of shock .... now I may be wrong (and I'm sure you will tell me if I am) but isnt Barack Obama in the process of pulling troops out of Iraq? I know that Afghan is still ongoing but these are not wars that he has started .... isnt he just picking up the pieces of mistakes made by Bush and trying to resolve the situation? So why the gasps if he is trying to move towards peace?
Please be gentle with me.... I'm not after an arguement, I just want to know why!!
Mrs Fun xx
He got it for one reason and one reason only....he is the first Black President of the USA....period.
From where I am sitting he has been in the job for five minutes, hardly a great acolade for a peace prize?
wonders if the USA customs will now think twice about letting Obama in?
re yusuf islam lol
what has Mr Stevens been up to now?

If we are being politically correct here hes not the first Black President, his mother is white and from Kansas and his father from Kenya. Hes actually the first mixed race President of USA.
dual-heritage...
... but he didn't invent dynamite, and that was cool

He clearly wasn't expecting it and I reckon doesn't want it from what i saw of his speech. It's a poisoned chalice for him. He knows he doesn't deserve it, but people are already slating him for getting it.
Do people really think a) he asked for it or b) it would do him any good?
I have no idea what the effect of accepting/rejecting it would be. Has anyone ever rejected it? I liked his initial accepatnce speech, referring to it as a call to action.
I agree with Kenty, (yet again), and while we wait for Britain to be taken over by theBlair led EU, I guess they will start work on a Gordon Brown statue for Trafagar Square...
He could have made a much better statement by refusing, saying he doesn't deserve it, than by using it as a platform to state his aims once again.

That is true but....every reference to him has the wording " black " attached to it.
Sorry he does not deserve it...he has done nothing to warrant it, and is this the same President who is sending more troops into Afghanistan?
Well that is a perfect reason to give someone a peace prize. Load of old bollox. There are far far more deserving people than Obama. I am suprised that Col Gadaffi has not been nominated for next year....yet
the interesting thing in all of this is that the closing entries for this was feb 1st... so he would have been in office a whole 2 weeks when "somebody" nominated him.....
I think he looked very embarrased about it... next year would have been more appropiate, I personally would have given it to Morgan Tsvangarai
in a way I think it says as much about the faith the world has in Obama as it didn't have in Bush2
its given right wing american politics and radio a bit of a dilema....Last Friday, there was global disbelief that Obama had lost. This Friday, there’s global disbelief that he won. lol
Maybe this is Oslo's way of making up for Copenhagen's Mistake..... wink
As always this is a classic example of..." it's not what you know....it's who you know "
Obama yes has made lots of promises but as we all know promises are easily made, acting and doing them is the difficult part for world leaders!
Obama talks a good fuck, but I am yet to be convinced he is everything people seem to think he is. I think the hysteria and excitement was mainly due to him being the first.....whatever. I will stand corrected IF he even ends up deserving of this peace thingy.

Ah, but his face is black - that's all that counts these days. If he wrote a song, he could qualify for a MOBO award but if he had taken after his mother and had a white face, he wouldn't. Funny old world, ain't it?

One word to describe it.
well he promised change, to close guantanamo, he's keeping it open, he promised to bring the troops home from iraq, then he said in 6 month's, then he said 2yrs...he promised to repeal the patriot act and wire tap survellance and he has re signed the executive order to maintain it...he said he would introduce medicare for all americans but is proposing to give the medicare administration to drug companies, he is increasing troop levels in afghanistan and given clearance for american troops to operate in northern pakistan and carry out "drone" attack's in pakistan...something bush, cheny and rumsfeld refused to do, he's handed billions more to goldman sachs and co (his controllers in wall st) without audit trail and continued rendition. same old same old and the american populus has woken up to it already and his ratings have fallen faster than any other pres since polling began. mmmm giving him the nobel peace prize could be a poisoned chalice or the end of nobel. watch the value of the dollar
As if you are all blind look here....
He promised to close Guatamo bay and signed the treaty for it less than 12hrs of swearing of oath, lifted the restriction for Cuban/Americans going home, the only American president to stand against the Isreal for building settlement in Gaza, made a speech in Islamic heartland of Egypt a country where five 911 bombers came from, stopped the nuclear plant proposed to be built in polland thus strengthening ties with Russians which will open doors for closer talks with North Korea and China...i mean the rest of the world seem to open up to America now whatelse is one to do...oh and not to mention his determinate intention to introduce NHS style of services to the Americans who cant seem to difference between socialist and communist....

he was sworn in on Jan 20th..... the Nominations closed on Feb 1st...... so did he do all that in the first 11 days he was in office?
I am not saying that he won't deserve it in years to come, but this is way too early and there were better candidates for me this year........

he would not be setting a precedent.... Le Duc Tho was given the prize jointly with henry kissenger in 1973 was his part in the paris peace accord that ended the vietnam war...
he declined it as that was "not peace in his country yet"
I'm not saying that he does not deserve it, but only being in office for 11 days at the time nominations closed does put it in prospective...
would not have stopped him being nominated for example for next year.. when alot of the policies would have taken shape
