Though the CIA and Al Qaeda connection is awfully tenuous. CIA provided weapons, training and intelligence to the Mujahedeen in Afghanistan. Al Qaeda was the name for "the base" as that is its strict translation. which referred to a training camp set up there by Abu Ebeida El-Banashiri.
