Do union leaders really have this Socialistic dream, or is it as I suspect....every man for himself?

Certainly seems so from here.

Shall I make a list of tory voters who live in council houses and make a donation to charity occasionally...or tories who use the N.H.S. or don't send their kids to private school....thet are appalling examples of capitalists ...shame on them.....your argument is as ever a large testicle stood proudly on a huge pile of bollocks

Isn't a testicle the correct term for a bollock?

The membership of the N.U.M. declined because the Thatcher government closed all the pits .....we've done this before you were wrong then you remain wrong..Scargill and the N.U.M. didn't close one single pit....we're now dependant on foreign energy supplies for one reason and she also nicked the school milk...as I said your understanding of recent British history leaves a lot to be desired.
You will never understand the miners strike because as I said you don't come from a mining area....and you will never get past your idea of the miners as a bunch of thick northern sheep who followed where Scargill lead.

I always worry about men who grow their hair to great lengths to cover up a bald pate...
A bald pate apparently shows great potency.... growing your hair like Scargill did (does) is just vain.

So as I understand your argument then boils down to ....they said it's true so it must be.....I do love a well reasoned critical analysis of things, well done Kent minor back to your seat.

Shall I rephrase ??...no fuck it I know what he means and I'm sure he knows what I mean...A slight difference in emphasis...perhaps you don't know any ex-miners So I will explain....you need to know the people involved to have an understanding of the strike..does that fit better ??seems I did rephrase after all

Weren't very many in Essex as I recall...
But what I do recall is the effect it had on putting the lid on Trades Unions unleashing great power over the ordinary working class who were basically not in the least un-content with their lot and just wanted to get on with their lives, providing for their families in good honest jobs.
Times change. The world moves on. Carbon based fuels dug up deep from underground can be likened to the 70's advert for Smash; the sherbet saucer beings from outer space laughing their tits off at housewives peeling potatoes when there are so many other more efficient ways of generating energy, like nuclear....

the out come was it was a battle of two egos

I have been debating and then you arrived and said I was talking testicles on top of bollocks rubbish. So it seems it is you that was not prepared to debate!
Yes it was a tad childish but funny all the same.
The thousands of lives in many cases were brought about by the individuals themselves, who followed Scargill like lambs to the slaughter house. I have NO sympathy for them at all.
The people I do feel sorry for or at least did at the time, were the ones who did not want to strike, but were forced yes that is the word, forced to comply with their unions orders.
Look what happened to those who went back to work, I bet you were in favour of that intimidation towards them.
Next you will be telling us that the intimidation and violence towards those miners never happened, and that it was all the fault of those nasty policemen and that nasty Tory Government.
Do people really still believe that?

I have never seeen such hatred expressed towards a group of human beings in my life based solely on what they end up doing to earn a living.
Were some members of our community scared by the coal man as a child or summat? or is there a wish to get a rise out of other community members?
For our younger readers, I should point out that the mining industry was systematically destroyed by a government with vested interests in its destruction and no concern for the misery caused.
The death of British mining was a tragedy. To dance on its grave is incredibly distasteful. But then like I said one presumes the thread is done for effect.

Famous quote....
" Yet what you need is not marches, demonstrations, rallies or wide associations, all of them are important. What you need is direct action. The sooner people understand that, the sooner we'll begin to change things".
Arthur Scargill
Yeah he changed things alright, but certainly not for the better.

You weren't debating you were gloating.....
The fact remains that the miners and Scargill didn't close the pits...you seem to gloss over this constantly...The Thatcher government closed the mines and decimated the British mining industry....as for the miners being forced to strike would that be the Nottinghamshire scabs ??not a great deal of striking there as I recall...There was intimidation and violence from both sides, try at least to represent the facts rather than some kind of good vs evil superhero showdown...as I think I may have said your understanding of recent British history is simplistic to say the least

It was a battle of one ego and thousands of men desperate to save their industry...Scargill was an elected mouthpiece, the miners were one of the best politically educated workforces in the country, the idea that they followed like lambs to the slaughter is idiocy...very few of the strikers were unaware of the stakes they were playing...all were prepared and did risk everything to try and save their industry..it's a shame that many refuse to recognise the sacrifice they made to try and keep their jobs...that's all just to remain in work for as long as the pits were viable..seems a shame that the government who wanted people to stand on their own feet and work saw fit to piss on them and leave them unemployed
