I would have thought a religious man might have kept his personal views to himself. Then again of coarse he is entitled to his view. Just seams a bit rude and inquired though
A senior Papal adviser has pulled out of the Pope's UK visit after saying arriving at Heathrow airport was like landing in a "Third World" country.
Who cares what an adult with imaginary friends thinks?
Pope Benedict started a trip to Britain on Thursday with some of the clearest criticism yet of his Church's handling of its sexual abuse crisis and urged the country to beware of "aggressive secularism."
People are complaining that we have been called a 3rd world country.
People have died in hospital corridors due to lack of space or facilities, we have people living homeless on the streets, we send troops to war, then expect them (as has happened on a few reported occasions) to buy their own kit to name a few examples.
Maybe he has a point.....
This country amazes me. Look at the fantastic things we have - free basic education, the advances we have in cancer treatment and other diseases, the fact our major museums and art galleries are free, the National Parks, libraries hell, even the fact that most eateries and drinkeries have clean, safe toilets fro customers to use. These things being available to every citizen is, to me, the indicator of a most civilsed country.
Then you see the sink estates, the people on trolleys in hospital corridors, old folk being moved from care home to care home as if they are parcels, prisons acting as no more than storage boxes for criminals without any resources left for dragging the petty criminals back into society, farmers making a loss on every lamb born.
So what are we? A beacon of civilisation as the Victorians thought we were and hoped to be in the future (which is now) or a 'third world' country in need of help from outside agencies to get ourselves back into the light?
I think we are both and I think we have to work incredibly hard and intelligently to fix the crap stuff without sacrificing the fantastic resources and opportunities available to us already.
Oh, and the England football team need to be selected for teamwork as well as individual skill and kept playing together for 3 months prior to any major international competition.
Well at least he has said something sensible on his visit.
I think the Pope's visit is turning out to be much better than the organisers had ever planned...
And I do have to admit to being considerably educated on some of the historical aspects associated with the places he has visited.
but wtf are Sky News doing having that awful Anne Widdecombe commentating on the events? She may now be a "prominent" ex politician converted Catholic (like some others I could mention) but she looks like she's been dragged through a hedge backwards and would be better employed commenting on a witches convention!
