these 2 threads appeared on A.N other chat board on the same day.......showing double standards/flip sides of political correctness/racism
both very interesting threads with interesting reactions by other posters. I was amazed at the two totally differnt ways of the schools involved handling the situations.....I'd be interested in your thoughts, particularly those of the teachers amongst us?
THREAD 1
daughter (9) comes out of school and asks me what a whore is. It transpires that they were talking about what they want to be when they grow up and a little asian boy at her desk told her this afternoon that she'll 'grow up to be a whore cos that's what all white girls are'
I went in and spoke to her teacher, she's aware what was said but says "there's not much I can do as it's his culture" !!
I basically exploded and said he should not be allowed to speak to other children like this but the teacher feels she can't do anything.
I've arranged a meeting with the head tomorrow (she's away today so unaware of what's happened), I'd appreciate some advice on how I can handle this. I don't think the boy should be allowed to get away with it, especially because of cultural differences.
(not sure if i can post a link to a thread on another chat forum, so have just included the OP....if anyone wants it, i can provide it, or if i get the OK will put it on here)
THREAD 2
Excited by stories of the Second World War during school classes, Steven Cheek did what generations of young boys have done before him.
Making an imaginary gun with his fingers, the nine-year-old pointed it at a classmate and said: 'We've got to shoot the German army.'
Moments later he found himself in front of the deputy head, who accused him of racism because his 'victim' had been a Polish boy.
He was made to stand in front of the class and make an apology while his mother, Jane Hennessey, was called in by the head of Purford Green Junior School in Harlow, Essex.
She was informed that a permanent record of her son's misconduct would be placed on file.
Miss Hennessey yesterday accused the school of overreacting. 'Steven has always wanted to join the Army when he grows up,' she said. 'That's his burning ambition and he loved learning about the war in class.
'In the week leading up to what happened, the school had been telling the children about the history of the war and he had come home every night talking about it.
'He's not a racist. He's only nine years old and he didn't single out the Polish boy, who is one of his good friends. This just happened to be who he was playing with. The deputy head shouted at Steven and said, "That's racism", which is ridiculous because Steven has a Polish aunt and they were on our side during the war.
'He didn't understand what he had done wrong. He was just playing a game like kids always do. He came home after being told off and said, "Mum, what's racism?" The school has overreacted and been very heavy-handed. They could have quietly told him off instead of turning it into a big issue.'
Miss Hennessey, 37, who lives in Harlow with Steven's father Darren Cheek, 39, an electrician, said her son got carried away during a class where the war was being discussed. He had never been in trouble before and had been bullied by other pupils since having to make the public apology.

Yet more, one sided PC bollocks!
Whats good for the goose...........
It seems it's acceptable to be racist in this country unless you are white & British... otherwise, you can say what you like & 'culture/religion/beliefs' can excuse all of it!
The annoying thing is that people don't seem to see that double standards make matters worse- they simply breed resentment.
wonder what would have happened if the girl had said something about "smelly @@@@@`@".....doesn`t what the school say just mean that anyone can say anything about anyone??
oh we in the controversial chat anyway.....
n the keyboards not set to english so i cant find the star key.....
As Witchy has said....this kind of crap makes things so much worse.
As somebody else has already said....it seems in 21st century Britain you can only be a racist if you are white British/English. Sorry that is a fact, and it is bollox btw.
Race relations will never improve unless this kind of leftie liberal rubbish is eradicated from our schools. What the fuc- do teachers do to learn this kind of rabble?
Stick to teaching....stick to what you are paid to do....I despair sometimes.
my daughter has just started 6th form college n theres a lad in her class who she describes as being an annoying little f*****, forever putting his hand up during class saying 'but sir, but sir can i just ask this question' etc etc etc, apparantly the teacher is getting rather peed off by him as are the rest of the students.
When i asked my daughter why they dont just tell him to shut up, the reply was we cant......he's black, n shes scared of being called racist.
if the racism card wasnt used as much, or rather allowed to be used by our legal system then we wouldnt feel like this, so i wouldnt really blame the teachers as they are put in ridiculous situations but rather our goverment & the wonderful pc brigade
Firstly, I agree with most of the sentiments expressed here by folk. They are both examples of moral cowardice dressed up as political correctness and they are entirely counter-productive and nurture the very abhorrent beliefs that all decent aspects of society (regardless of colour or creed) are trying to rid ourselves of.
Mr K, this "leftie liberal rubbish" is not the problem. It is intolerance. As simple as that. The self same intolerance you show towards many other people who don't share your views.
Yep, the schools/teachers got both these examples stupefyingly wrong and they will hopefully be held to account, but then to take that and make sweeping generalisations about a large cross section of society with no basis for proof other than two cited examples of crass practice, is just as offensive and intolerant. All white women are whores, all teachers are namby pamby, ineffective, inherently racist (must be to seemingly condone the attitude cited) liberals?
I'm not suggesting for one moment I agree with what the schools and teachers cited by Mrs B in the OP did, I merely take issue with the massive generalisation of one group of society, something Mr K you rightly condemn that child for doing about white women, but which you are then happy to do at every opportunity to people who don't share your political, moral or ethical views.
Racism works all ways against all skin tones. The argument that this is somehow sanctioned by "culture" is the worst form of limp, cowardly evasiveness I've heard in many a year. Rightly the teacher should be held accountable for this, but also we must look at what kind of society we have created where she felt unable to pull the child up and correct them without fear of being accused of being prejudiced? That isn't the school's fault Mr K, that's our fault. We've voted the past few Governments in and they instigated the changes. So if we are apportioning blame, we can look to ourselves too.
As for the "Shooting Germans" argument, to me this is just political correctness gone mad. The head teacher of that school needs a reality check and higher powers brought in to instruct her in what actually entails truly racist behaviour. This situation could have been diffused with a smile and gentle word to the child by the teacher with no fuss whatsoever. That this even made the news says more to me about the school and the headteachers desperate need for exposure to be seen to be "right on" politically.
Don't get me wrong Mr K, idiocy like this needs to be rooted out the Education (and any other) system, but to then go from that and accuse all teachers of being the same lily-livered cowards who are responsible for this mess, is wholly unfair. You would feel aggrieved if I knew a bloke who worked as a printer who was a violent racist, sexist and then came on here stating that all printers therefore by default are the same and have caused the problems evident in society. I don't know if that is what you mean to do in your posts (I'd like to think it isn't), but that is how it comes across at times. To me anyway.
Thing is Mr K, we can't eradicate the beliefs these children have from schools, because the children do not get these racist beliefs from schools. They get them from the own moral prejudices and beliefs of their family, friends, social groups, culture, literature and peers. What we perceive as "bad" in terms of school and British society may well see the child being rewarded at home, praised and positively reinforced. No matter how hard schools work, teachers can't solve this, they can only work towards trying to change it (rather than take the cowardly way and avoid it). It is endemically a societal problem. The only answer to intolerance is understanding and too many people are far too intolerant to understand that, on both sides of the argument.
And yes it does make it worse. Both "them" being intolerant of "us" and "us" of "them". Although I prefer to think of it as a shared problem that requires a "we" answer.
But that's just lefty liberal idealism I know.
In the first case I think the child needed and English lesson, defining the word whore.
In the second, was he not inviting a Pole to defend his land against the invading Germans?
It was just a game. I think even I played cowboys and Indians.
Im sorry to learn of your daughter suffering direct racism.
I hope the meeting with the head teacher produces a more professional and informed response than that you received from the teacher.
May I suggest that if the head teacher seems equally misinformed you raise the matter with your local Citizens Advice who I am pretty sure will be happy to help you further the complaint.
I have some experience in these matters and the law works in all directions.
Good luck n best wishes for a succesfull outcome.
