That's one of my favourite apps... it's ridiculously geeky but utterly fascinating! I was stunned by the number of planes in the air at once... go look at the bigger airports, there are zillions of planes coming and going all at once.

The data is populated (fed) by equipment capable of receiving Mode_S signals which is what the aircraft transponders transmit from. I have this equipment running 24/7.

Yep indeed, 40 miles this weekend :-) will do 10 miles of intervals tomorrow. Killer on ya legs but really builds up the lactic acid threshold.
