Should beer be sold at World Cup football games ?
Seems a simple enough question, with seemingly many countries banning sales within their stadia in efforts to reduce football related violence that has blighted the game for decades.
However seems that FIFA now disagree now that they have Budweiser is a big FIFA sponsor of the World Cup.
General Secretary Jerome Valcke said the right to sell beer must be enshrined in a World Cup law and must be sold at all venues hosting matches in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
However alcoholic drinks are currently banned at Brazilian stadiums and has been since 2003 in an attempt to tackle violence between rival football fans, something which FIFA must have known about when the 'finals' were awarded to Brazil several years ago.
So why does FIFA think it can over rule a country's Legislation ?
If we'd won the right to host the finals, would we of had to change the Law {Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc) Act 1985 (as amended)} just to 'accommodate' FIFA as well ?
From Jerome Valcke's comment "must be enshrined", does this mean right to sell beer isn't currently within FIFA 'rules' ?
What are FIFA going to do in 2022 ?
(Qatar are their preferred host nation and Islam takes an uncompromising stand in prohibiting intoxicants, forbidding Muslims from drinking or even selling alcohol)
