we need to change the way we work.
many of the so called benefit scroungers actually fall ill by slogging their guts out in some shite job.
we need a wider spread of jobs to let manual workers develop again. we need to make things and grow things.
also getting back to work is like training to be fit again. it needs time to reach performance levels.
so shorter work periods. get the unfit, fit again with things they can do.
an overall change in how economy is distributable.

im always interested by the fact everyone seems to look at the banks as the masters,
when it was normal people and the high demand for thier money that caused the ultimate collapse of northern rock

I don't think I mentioned banks Rob,but hey ho …...I had thought the problem with the banks was their greed ,i.e. their eagerness to loan money to people who couldn't pay it back....of course people clammered for credit they have for the last 20 years had it thrust down their throats, if people are constantly told that borrowing is not only the best way to get what you want but is also good for the economy who can blame them for borrowing, the financial crisis in the banking sector is of their own making …
My point was about the evasion and avoidance of tax....yes I know they are legally different but they are morally the same...they are a refusal to accept your responsibility to the society that gives you your living
lets hope that the banks and the likes of vodaphone are next then.
but on another note anyone who buys cheap baccie or knock of dvd`s and fake goods are no different to the banks or such like

The banks and the offshore tax havens and barely legal tax dodges should be first steal most and would make most of the cuts this government are making superfluous

This is as far as I'm aware NOT a schoolroom,I and I'm sure many others have no problem deciphering Gulsons posts.....can I suggest that if you have a point to make about their content you make it,if not please refrain from proselytizing your awful view of English as a dead language.
Re. Eats shoots and leaves …....Grocers' Grocer's …..nothing wrong with either ,the point is that they are understood

Re. Eats shoots and leaves …....Grocers' Grocer's …..nothing wrong with either ,the point is that they are understood
It isn't about being a 'fascist', my comments were entirely about the understandability of the message and the responsiblity of the sender of the message to make it understandable.
Oh, and the grocers' grocer's thing? No, there is absolutely nothing wrong with either. But the fact is they mean different things.
The grocers' shop - is a shop that belongs to more than one grocer. The grocer's shop is a shop that belongs to a single grocer. It is likely that is most cases the number of grocers would be understood from elsewhere in the text, but not necessarily. And a random mixture of similar variants removes the ability to work it out.
Put enough incorrect variants into a sentence and it ceases to make the sense the writer wants it to make. It won't be understood - simple as.
It isn't fascist to want to be able to understand exactly what someone is writing. And you're right this isn't a schoolroom, so things don't have to be spot on. But nor do I have to drag my brain through text which appears to have been written in such a sloppy way as to insult the reader. On the lines of 'you aren't important enough for me to bother writing clearly'. Clear writing is good manners.
I am not prozletising anything. My view of English is not awful, nor do I ascribe to the idea that it mustn't change - it isn't dead. And this is a forum - I can comment on what I find in it. As can you - and you did comment on my post. That's fine. I will continue to comment as I see fit - I'd like to say that you don't get to tell me when and what I can comment about but that would be me telling you what you can comment about so I'm not sure I can - but you get the idea.

As to manners ..... surely it is also bad manners to not make the attempt to understand

Surely this is a bit like trying to listen to "head banging" music. It's an assault on one's delicate ears. To prevent permanent damage, one takes the necessary precautions. In reading or trying to make sense of something bordering the unintelligible, one has to take similar precautions so as not to corrupt the benefit of one's education and upbringing.
so am i to think that if someones dialect is somewhat difficult to understand its acceptable to turn your back in ignorance and walk on dunno

If G you had the education and upbringing you allude to, you would of course recognise the appalling lack of manners displayed by your dismissal of the education and upbringing of others
You would also I'm sure have seen fit to point out the lack of manners in the following

It would be funny - if I could read it. No (or random) punctuation, precious few breaks and poor spelling makes it both difficult and unpleasant to read. He can't be bothered to write correctly (can't remember if dyslexia is a feature here but this site has a spell checker and common sense says put gaps in to break up a solid paragraph) so I can't be bothered to read it. If a person wants their point to be understood (if not accepted), it is their responsiblity to make it understandable.

My bold there....one wonders why if someone can't be bothered to read something they see fit to comment on it....or is there some satisfaction to be found in belittling others that I don't see ??

ride a watersmooth-silver
stallion
and break onetwothreefourfive pigeonsjustlikethat
Jesus

Mister Death
Sometimes you see lack of punctuation and the crowding of words are stylistic choices ..... or had you not considered that possibility
If you want a rant about whose fault it is....
try one.
It works for me...

That's nothing like Estuary English.
there is absolutely no value in criticising someone's verse other than to divert attention away from the issue's being raised and i'm very glad that some of you have pointed this out.
banking and finance institutions created this debt crisis with credit they did not have but now rob from the people, their children and grandchildren.
the sooner people realise, and they will very quickly, that they are being driven into paupery and desparation by a monetary system that is broken and taken to war to die in the names of humanitarian and anti-terrorism bullshit, the better.
it is not joe blogs on 20, 30, 40 or a hundred grand a year that made bad bets in the billions or even trillions that they did not have (margin) that we, the taxpayer, has been made the debtor of this ponzi scheme by both new labour and the libcons.
if the government can instruct the bank of england to print more money, then who the phuck do we owe it to ? the central bank of the u.k., the bank of england, is a private bank, owned by private shareholders and it lends money created out of thin air, AT INTEREST, to the government/treasury/taxpayer.

i think every benefit and entitlement should be stopped, all education should be paid for privately or you dont get any, same for health care, uni fees to be incrementaly increased to 500% higher than now, students to pay 20% interest, state pension to be stopped and all taxed paid to the banks and bankers bonuses to be increased alongside the retirement age.
any country with oil should be demonised as al cia-qader, bombed back to the dark age and taken over. and we should pay a gallon for our blood soaked fuel. other countries like iceland, greece, ireland and portugal, in that order, who's banks lost money, should pass the debt over to their taxpayers and suffer austerity for being so wreckless and their retirement age raised.
as a solution, pauperising people with cuts and inflation should raise demand and get us all back to work. worldwide. great idea of mine init.

No it's not. We have had this debate before and I have asked you to produce evidence of your totally spurious claim. So come on, in your own words, provide some hard evidence to substantiate your claim.
It's not just your grammar that's crap.

Now Ben usually agrees with gulson. Would be interesting to learn his views on this take...

I think this example goes some way to explaining the cynicism of myself and others.......here we have a government who are more than happy to write off 1 billion of unpaid illegally avoided tax in favour of clawing it back from benefits claimants. And Vodaphone are far from alone in their efforts to tread the line between legal and illegal
I have no doubt the majority will be found eligible for the benefits they claim, I have no doubt some will be found to be borderline cases lose their benefits and suffer,I have no doubt many will suffer a great deal of stress and have their conditions exacerbated by this....I have no doubt that many would be found eligible for benefits they do not claim if anyone cared to investigate that (they wont)
This government (they are not the first) are fishing for minnows in order to feed the sharks that they are so afraid of upsetting.
im always interested by the fact everyone seems to look at the banks as the masters,

Benefits cheats are smoke and mirrors waved at you to hide the real leeches cheats thieves and scumbags who will take any action to avoid paying their dues to the society they bleed dry...they are the real scum not some bloke down the road who gets fifty quid he shouldn't .And the real joke ?? the real tragedy.....nearly every other poster on this topic thinks the government are being reasonable......absolute fucking joke.....I'd be pissing myself if it wasn't so pathetic
lets hope that the banks and the likes of vodaphone are next then.

Once more with feeling........altogether now
Well Staggs, as they say....
its the rich wot gets the pleasure, it's the poor wot gets the blame.
Ain't it all a fucking shame...
No G it's a fucking disgrace
And it's where any reasonable government would start .... not the bunch of lickspittles and charlatans we seem to be constantly lumbered with
Note the number crunching on the bottom left of the linked page ... where is all this money going ???? not where it's needed I'll bet
looks like the hmrc need a better lawyer and deal maker
and not one that`s already in bed with big corporations dunno
i started reading this thread and became bored at the end of the first page. If one of my dogs has a parasite on it i treat it with spot on. About time this country did the same.

Once more with feeling........altogether nowstaggers, northern rock collapsed because it was lending long term and borrowing short term (overnight) from other banks and when other banks could no longer lend because they were insolvent, northern rock collapsed. ponzi comes to mind. just a point but like you, i cannot understand why so many people fall for the con. make the scrounging poor poorer and waive taxation for the very rich making them richer. bit like peace bombing of civilians and infrastructure really and support for al ciaqader in libya. the world is upside down. oh and lending countries more money at interest to reduce their debt ?
food and energy costs rising by 20% making inflation only 4% while incomes are falling. bang goes the age old myth that workers wage demands cause inflation and make us uncompetetive. still, the bankers are only going to pay themselves 14 billion in bonuses instead of the 16 billion they earned ?
there will be a deepening of the crisis felt by all (the 98% of us) this autumn and winter as gas and electricy costs soar beyond the reach of the average family and particularily those on any kind of benefits as the cuts bite. everyone should go to their m.p.'s surgeries and give them a roasting and demand to know which way they voted on particular issues, wars, cuts and austerity etc.
To be honest Gulson I'm fully aware of why Northern Rock collapsed as is Rob that it in reality had nothing to do with the fact that people wanted to borrow money and everything to do with the fact that they lent it is a no brainer .... my first mortgage was with Northern Rock and at the time they had a reputation for being difficult to get a loan from (they actually used to say no rather than "yes but it'll cost you)....but they along with the other lenders pressured government for less and less regulation and we saw the result
I didn't answer Rob because basically I couldn't be arsed....I wasn't and I'm still not fooled, there was and is only one place to lay the blame for the banks and our economic predicament and that is directly at their and successive governments feet
