Well thank goodness we didn't go into the Euro Zone, or we would be having to bail out Greece on top of all the other problems. My view is that they have expanded "Europe" too much too quickly, countries like Greece and Polland should have been deferred till a time that a more cohesive relationship had evolved between the mainstream countries.
However, I think that the relief will be short lived, the problems of the global economy are going to hit every country and whichever of the parties gets in here, they are going to have to tax and cut far more than they are admitting to in the pre-election build up.

Think your right on all of the above.

I agree too. The main issue with the Eurozone is the admission of weak economies. The other option for Greece would have been to leave the ERM and devalue its currency. Whilst unpalatable it may have been, I would have favoured this option if I were them.
Thanks for those two posts. Interesting about Greece leaving to devalue which would no doubt be a short term fix - not sure what the longer term implications would be though.

See all the riots and violence in Athens today.
Wonder if it could happen here...........depends on how deep and long our "Age of Austerity" (sp?) is.

That would depend on who wants riots!
I dont know very much about international ecnomics. I have lived through a few recessions and watched them closely. I dont think this one has hardly started and the way way worst is yet to come. The saddest thing is that huge parts of the country haven't recovered form the 1980s yet.
I shall be too busy earning a living to riot

1. we shall be bailing out greece though our banks which hold securities in the form of greek government bonds
2. the expansion of the european union and it's central bank, (euro's) has taken place at a pace determined by global financial and banking interest's and has more to do with soveriegn debt and credit default swaps than ever it does with cohesive relationships.
3. as i have said on many occaisions long previous to the announcement of an election campaign, the theatre of the palace of westminster is a fraud and the circus act's that we are treated to by the mainstream media is soley to make the vast majority believe that we live in some kind of democracy and that the elected politicians are decision makers.
4. also, as i have said before, on more than one occaision in the last 18 months, it will make absolutely no difference to domestic or foriegn policy when there is a general election or who is elected. whoever is elected as her majesties loyal government or becomes her majesties LOYAL opposition, hospitals, schools, libraries, fire staions, ambulance services and all manner of of public services will close.
5. currencies and asset values will be destroyed in this coming period and the quality of life as we knew it will deteriorate in aggregate (not withanding the kenties who think they will be better off) and we will be continually fed with the lie that it's foriegners fault's for being here and it's the fault of our own avarice for borrowing too much.
6. it's all the fault of them dole scrounging, black, eastern european, , kosovan polish moslem, al ciaquader, terrorist, benefit fraudster, non white, non english, meals on wheels eatin, taliban, airline greedy cabin staff, lazy public workers with too good a pensions, pensioners who live too long and the pure, honest, whiter than white politicians and their banker buddies in the city have got to put things right by depriving us of all our RIGHTS and pack us off to war.
Not to mention an increase in our contribution to EU finances...and the first 5% of all the VAT revenue that goes to the EU.

YOu're entitled t believe what you like, but I think you're wrong, and in the absence of any evidence on your part I'm not persuaded by your repeated use of the word .

i think their may have been an objection here to the fact that using a term with specific meaning, that describes a horrific and personal attack, that is a trigger for many and should not be diminished,to describe a political party and its actions is wrong and inappropiate.
If thats not what u meant away, sorry, its what i think and it annoys the hell out of me.
Sometimes it is appropriate to use the word when describing some actions, other than the sexual content. It is a word that has a message to say and that is how you use it. The famous use of the word, and it sits just right IMO, is the of Nanking. No other word could describe the horror in that city.

For what it is worth. In that context, IMO, I think it is used right to describe his actions to the pensions, and in no way does it detract from the horrible sexual act against another human. Same word but different......it makes sense in my head. I am off to work lol

Don't wish to quote all the above...so just saying:
Think the financial problems...are not wholely Gordan Brown and new labours fault. It is a worldwide situation..as can be seen from Greece....and now very fast..Portugal...Spain and Ireland and slipping close !! All i was answeing is who the people were that were going to riot.
As for the cuts.....well for me its like the lawn....its been raining for two weeks..the grass needs cutting.....but if you do cut it....you will just rip the grass up....you need to wait till the sun comes out and its dry.....Yes we need to reign back and cut, the question is..when and by how much. As I say....if it was my job, and I had worked at it, I wouldn't be best pleased when I was thrown on the dole, in what will be a very difficult employment time.
Very pleasing to have so many meaningful replies to my orig thread. I think we will know quite soon if we are also going to go into a downward spiral - I think we should just avoid it, but you never know!

They did use of women but there was an awful lot of other nasty stuff that happened at Nanking. So they used the word to describe the whole affair and not just one part. It is easy to see in the dictionary where is defined as you say and also to plunder and despoil, as in the countryside or in the example given, the pensions (as they were plundered) I don't think it has been used to heighten or lessen the debate but a good description of what happened in the OP's opinion (or whoever said it as I have forgotten now ffs).
Getting onto other words that you brought up i.e. lynching. This is where I get confused with PC usage. Lynching is a common word in the US and as well as black people getting lynched there was an awful lot of everybody getting lynched in the olden days, so to restrict it to one type of person is daft in my view. Either ban it for all or not at all. Me and a mate say we are going to lynch our kids if they are naughty again, he is black and he has never told me that he finds it offensive. People need to stop looking at what divides us but look at what brings us together........like stringing up our kids when they are a pain in the arse lol
Dave_Notts
PS what was the OP again? Kaz you are a pain in the bum dragging this convo out of context lol

The cost of bailing out the Republic of Ireland's stricken banks has risen to 45bn euro (£39bn), opening a huge hole in the Irish government's finances.
More trouble on the horizon?
