The French are doing that which you always seem to want the British to do- looking after themselves first.
The asylum seekers/immigrants are doing the same- either fleeing persecution or trying to find something better for their families. It's human nature.

IF and it is a big IF they were doing that, then why do they not stay in France, or one of the many other countries they pass through?
Very often, these migrants enter the EU somewhere other than France.
France subscribed - along with four other member States, to the which effectively eliminated border controls allowing free passage between subscribing Member States. The UK, in the guise of the (then) Prime Minister John Major did not sign up to it, nor did Ireland.
The migrants arriving at Calais are not the responsibility of the French; they technically are the responsibility of the Member State who allowed them entry to Europe without control.
Unfortunately, France just has to clean up someone else's mess.

Yes pass them over to the UK.
There were people in the " jungle " who were from countries NOT signed up to that treaty...namely Iraq and Iran and Afghanistan.
The French did not deport them, just moved them on knowing that they would set up another camp and try to get into the UK.
Why do the French not deport them?

These three points..
The French do NOT pass them over to the UK. They find their own way.
You miss the point about Schengen. This treaty is to allow free passage of persons without border control within the Schengen States. They don't have to be European, they just have to be in a Schengen State to move freely between them without border controls. By all accounts, they should be in the Schengen State lawfully in the first place but if they are not and they are discovered, they should be returned to the point of entry. You could just as much argue that the Member State at the point of entry bears the responsibility for stopping them in the first place for all the good that it will do to prevent the problem even occurring. The same rules apply to a Briton; on entry to France, for example, he has entered a Schengen State and thus can move freely without border controls between Schengen States.
The French DO move them back to the point of entry where that can be established.
I just wonder if the French (who have to find the funds to process these migrants) have a view that there are other priorities to be dealt with on the home front. They are not the guardians of the British State after all.
GNV....they may well not be the " guardians of the British State " but they do very little to stop them gathering, and know they will try everything to get into the UK.
The French do indeed not do enough to stop it. They do this because France is not their intended destination....it is the UK.
IF they were staying in France, you can bet your arse they would do more to stop it, than they do at the moment.
France is merely a passing stop on their way here...the French know this....you know this..and so do most other people.
Persecuted? Yeah right. IF someone was in serious danger they would go to the FIRST point of safety...that ain't Blighty...is it?
Roll up...roll up.....this way to Croydon.

Not quite as you would think confused
When they tried that, the "jungle" was established and citizens were at considerable personal risk - witness the female journalist who was there!
Sangatte, like it or not, is a controlled environment where they can control and monitor what is happening.
If they manage to "escape" through the tunnel or on the back of a lorry, so be it. Sangatte is not a prison, it's a place of refuge.
Given your take on this, you might draw some comfort from the fact that a significant number have to be "shovelled" up by teams each morning when their plans go disastrously wrong and they end up in pieces on the track somewhere along the tunnel length.
I think many others have a different view.
You seem to subscribe to the concept of treating the symptoms rather than the disease itself. The French can't alter the encouragement given by Britain to migrants (if such exists) but Britons can, by electing a party with the Political will to do something about it!
