UK Photocard Driving Licences - when does yours expire?

Not really one for passing these emails on but I've just checked my licence and sure enough... it runs out on 6th June 2015 yet I'm allowed to drive until 2043. confused
Thousands of motorists are at risk of being fined up to £1,000 because they are unwittingly driving without a valid licence.
They risk prosecution after failing to spot the extremely small print on their photocard licence which says it automatically expires after 10 years and has to be renewed - even though drivers are licensed to drive until the age of 70. The fiasco has come to light a decade after the first batch of photo licences was issued in July 1998, just as they start to expire.
Motoring organisations blamed the Government for the fiasco and said 'most' drivers believed their licences were for life. A mock-up driving licence from 1998 when the photocards were launched shows the imminent expiry date as item '4b'. They said officials had failed to publicise sufficiently the fact that new-style licences - unlike the old paper ones - expire after a set period and have to be renewed.
To rub salt into wounds, drivers will have to pay to renew their card - a charge which critics have condemned as a 'stealth tax' and which will earn the Treasury an estimated £437million over 25 years. Official DVLA figures reveal that while 16,136 expired this summer, so far only 11,566 drivers have renewed, leaving 4,570 outstanding. With another 300,000 photocard licences due to expire over the coming year, experts fear the number of invalid licences will soar, putting thousands more drivers in breach of the law and at risk of a fine.
At the heart of the confusion is the small print on the tiny credit-card-size photo licence, which is used in conjunction with the paper version.
4b: The small print on the back of the driving licence is easy to miss, just below the driver name on the front of the photocard licence is a series of dates and details - each one numbered. Number 4b features a date in tiny writing, but no explicit explanation as to what it means. The date's significance is only explained if the driver turns over the card and reads the key on the back which states that '4b' means 'licence valid to'.
Even more confusingly, an adjacent table on the rear of the card sets out how long the driver is registered to hold a licence - that is until his or her 70th birthday. A total of 25million new-style licences have been issued but - motoring experts say - drivers were never sufficiently warned they would expire after 10 years. The DVLA said failure to update the photocard after 10 years fell into the same category as failing to inform them of a change of address.

CHECK YOUR LICENCE EXPIRY DATE!!!
Hey Dirtygirly, thanks for pointing that out!! I've just checked mine and it expires next October, I would never have noticed that and would probably have ended up with a fine! xx
This subject is doing the rounds amongst the expat community too.
It seems that, if you live abroad, you cannot change your address on your licence to anything other than a UK address so, what to do?
The UK Government cannot fine you for failing to change the photo on your licence because it is they who prevent you from doing so.
Its called "natural justice".
The photo aspect of your licence has no effect on the licence privileges itself. The licence expiry is at the age of 70 after which you are required to have a medical. If you live abroad, DVLA cannot issue a licence to you without a UK address and in those circumstances, your licence expires entirely.
However, here in France, you can trade-in your very expensive UK photocard licence for a French one on a like for like basis. There is no expiry date (except the one when you expire!) and the licence is perfectly legal for use in the UK and elsewhere in Europe.
It doesn't "expire", the photo becomes invalid and hence the licence needs updating.
You should get an update pack with all the details you need before the photo becomes invalid.
Your passport photo does the same.
Now, I know the ladies on here do not need the photo updating, since they never age and remain beautiful eternally. But the guys get a certain haggard and worn-out look after a few years, and after ten they look like a reheated dog turd.
Anyway, since BOTH parts have to be sent back to the cat-food factory in Swansea for renewal you should keep a few photocopies of BOTH PARTS that you send back....since it is FAR from unknown for categories to be wrong when returned.
Mine expires August 2010, but then I get a letter from DVLA every time my licence expires anyway.
My licence to drive people round the twist expires in 2100 ish
Waves paper license in the air saying "ner ner ne ner ner!"
:smug:
bolt
On a serious note, good call DG- I've heard of several people this has caught out
One of the girls in the office still has her paper one... are you allowed to still have that? dunno
I got a photocard when I moved out of my parent's house cause by law I had to change my address on it so didn't really have a choice.

Yup.
I've had a change since the photo ones came in, but in the early days- and you could opt to keep the paper ones. Looks like they're forcing the photocard ones upon you now though if you change details:

Even with the photocard you still get a paper licence ( so the bastards can add the points if you get caught being a naughty person  )
Mine expires in 2030 by which time I'll be too fucking senile to drive most likely :silly:

Yeah... and if you hire a car you need the paper part too or the hire company charge you eight quid to phone up DVLA and get someone to check you have no points! rolleyes
I raked through six years of paperwork and found it eventually! lol
I've still got points on mine that expired 3 years ago but I haven't changed it as it'll cost me to have the points removed. Don't see the point as I'll be changing my name on it when the divorce comes through so may as well do it at the same time for no extra cost
Lol i'm at the age now where the DVLA sent me the renewal form every 5yrs for my HGV licence..
Though I did check the car expiry date on the car bit & its in 2012.......(ba###rds with stealth tax).
Then I looked at my electronic taco card & thats in 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When you move dunno unless abroad
As I have to renew my licence every 3 years does this 10 year rule still apply for the photo card?
I work for a hire company and have to be aware of all the driving licence rules
The paper licence is valid until *your expiry dates unless you change name or address
The card licence can be classed as invalid if you don’t carry your counterpart - you’d be amazed how many coppers we get in who can’t find theirs rolleyes
The DVLA charge 49pence per minute on a 0900 number - so don’t let the robbing car hire company take anymore than £3 of you
As yet there is no plan for making it compulsory to have a card/photo licence although there is a talk about a chip and pin type licence
Please, please, please all of you who have moved and not changed address with the DVLA and got a replacement card licence DO IT NOW!!
I have been in the unfortunate position of having to contact the local police when a customer had not changed their address and had their licence revoked to stop them driving away as it also invalidates their car insurance.
The gent in question had received points for speeding in a 30 zone which as you all know is a £60 fine and 3 points, as he'd not changed address they couldn’t contact him and therefore any court summonses where missed. LICENCE REVOKED
Hope this is helpful
Jane xx
It is back-door compulsion. The paper licence will not be renewed if any detail needs changing. They will only issue a photo licence.
Note that the one-piece paper licence differs from the two-piece licence on m/cycle entitlement because the one-piece licence was issued when the m/cycle test and engine sizes was different. The new one if issued will not be the same.
i still have a paper one ,so unless i change address then i am ok till 2029. :giggle:
I still can't understand why women have one in the first palce...... rolleyes
I have an old green paper one..... laminated with sticky tape!
